Yes but unless the devs change it, if I remember right, you can't upgrade the starting sword even if you glitch yourself to have it since you're not supposed to ever have that weapon to upgrade. As such it's damage would fall off very quick once enemies started leveling and you couldn't level your melee weapon.
The glitch isn't really that complicated, the reddit post directions can be shortened drastically.
1. Create a new character and progress till you talk to Ford.
2. Exit to main menu. Alt+tab out. Backup the profile.
3. Delete character.
4. Create a new character without starting.
5. Restore the backup save.
6. Start game.
And if you want to skip Rig's quest to upgrade your weapon to +1, you can do this same trick but progress till you get the D.A.T.L.A., then you can pretty much play the entire game with +0 weapons assuming you never buy from world shops or craft the armor from altars because they come pre-upgraded.
