I'll simply answer your question with another question:
Why three musketeers instead of four?
"As for why Remnant – which will be out on August 20 for $40 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One – supports three-player co-op and not four, Gunfire told me that they actually did try four players, but found that it became too run-and-gun, or they had to make the enemies too bullet sponge-y, neither of which felt right for Remnant to them."
They don't. They have 4 fingers 1 thumb
Only real answer the rest of you guys are clowns. Most co-op games are four players, and this game is obviously heavily inspired by L4D.
The devs don't seem to have a community rep active here, so maybe that's not any time soon.
If I was going to speculate, it could be the size and the routing of the game's maps are better for 3 players? It could be they found that the enemy AI was more better with 4 players than 3. Could be the game had lag issues with 4 players and they wanted to offer a smoother experience. Or it could be the co-op sessions have better "alchemy" among the various classes with 3 players than 4.
When it comes to tactical co-op fun I haven't necessarilyy found that more players makes a session more fun or more tactical.
But it's all conjecture. If they do, say, something like a Reddit Ask Me Anything, I'd love to hear their answer to this question. :)
They attempted to do 4 man but it either turned the game into a easy run and gun or bullet spongy enemies. with only 3 people they were able to hit the sweet spot of just enough enemies and life total to not be too easy and not be too bullet spongy. the game was originally intended to be 4 man they even had it on their promotion picture which they edited the 4th character out of. if you want quicker answers from dev's your best bet is to join their discord https://discord.gg/2bV9nrA they're really active on there with answering questions.
