Melee build possible?

Havnt played this game but it looks like Dark Souls. Can you do a melee only build?

You won't be able do a "pure" melee build since some boss mechanics require guns to bypass or are generally unreachable. But you can do heavily melee-oriented builds.

There are traits focused on melee amd few skills, but its very risky, but as mentioned above you will need to shoot some targets, there' even a enemy that just damages you from getting to close

Honestly, it's not viable in my opinion. There only seems to be a handful of enemies without a ranged attack. While there are traits that will bolster you melee damage it's a crap shoot whether you can get them in your playthough and you will likely have to play most of the game the way it's clearly meant to be played. Also... melee weapons don't allow you to equip mods, only guns do, meaning you can't even use mods without actually shooting your gun a lot to build up the energy for the mod to work.

Get the petrified maul and the leech ring and you're in good shape. The adds that boss fights spawn can be cleaned up easy with a few good maul swings w/melee traits and leech ring.

Not 100% but you fan focus a build around it for sure but you will end up micing both unless you are doing some kind of self challenge which would be very cool.

When you get all the traits for melee speed and melee mod dmg etc and mix it with the right set some melee attacks become devastatingly strong!

you can charge the mod with the melee weapon, just pick the weapon with the mod and melee some enemies and you will see it charges

Leech ring + mantlet of thorns and laugh as most mobs just kill themselves on you XD

Are these late game items or can you build your character like this early on?

Reason I ask is; this game comparable to Dark Souls gameplay or is it just a 3rd person shooter with DS elements?

Takes a while as the build is loot dependent. Without it Melee is at best a backup for mobs. Eve with that you still need you guns.

That first vid says it all. "Here's my Melee build"--opens up with ranged and uses ranged over 50% of the fight. Admittedly it hits hard when it does but mechanics of this game requires ranged.
