Fifth level checkpoint

It'd be nice if there was a checkpoint before the boss on the fifth level. The prior two sequences are a bit time consuming, so it'd be nice if I could skip one or both of them if I've already passed them.

Multiplayer?

I know this gets asked on just about every game now, but in the description it says "You and your friends". Are those AI "friends" or eventuyally will the game be CO-OP?
