Can't play it - too much screen tear + lag - Any ideas?
Hey all,

I'm unable to even play this game - when i get to the main menu, the screen tearing is so intense i can barely exit the game.

I'll provide my specs below for detail, but is there any way to fix this so i can try the game out - or has anyone got any idea's on how i can debug it and find a cause?

Some things i've tried:

- Restarting PC multiple times
- Reinstalling Game
- Checked all drivers are up to date (they were)
- Tried different USB 3.0 ports for sensors + headset (no difference)
- Uninstalling+reinstalling steam vr

Specs:
Headset: Oculus Rift Touch Bundle
2 x front facing sensors
Windows 10 64 bit
Intel 4790k i7 4ghz (running stock, not overclocked)
16gb Ram
MSI GTX 970 "4gb" gfx card

Really wan't to try this game as i've heard a lot of great things about it.

Hmmm. I've had this happen on a couple of occasions but it usually goes away after rebooting SteamVR. It usually happens after playing another game, almost as if the other game hasn't exited completley and not left enought resources for Compound. Like you say the game becomes a stuttering mess with tearing all over the place.

I've been getting this on a vive as well. It seems to be related to the overlay, as I've found that opening and closing the overlay a few times clears it up. When it clears up the whole screen flickers black for a brief moment and then the same starts running smoothly.

I also find it has this problem when it first loads after coming from Steam VR Home.

Given your specs, I wouldn't have expected it to be too choppy but the demo is *very* unoptimised and that can't be helping. The upcoming version should have significant improvements for frame rates that should help.

I get this too, everytime I've tried it. I'm below spec, but I find most other games fine to play:

Oculus Touch
2x sensors
i5-3470
760GTX
8Gb RAM

Interestingly, if I open Steam VR overlay whilst still in the Compound opening area, and the Compound scene remains in the background, the performance suddenly becomes very smooth. As soon as I close Steam overlay it's back to Migraine-land. Does the Steam overlay pause the game logic?

I think it does, as I see the same when I bring up the overlay. I'm wondering if it's an initialization problem, maybe a race condintion or smething entering a busy loop since if I keep toggling the menu it eventually seems to go away, and then can come back when re-opening the overlay.

Once the problem has gone it stays away until opening the overlay.

thanks for al the input chaps. nice to know i'm not the only one having issues.

steam overlay is smooth when i bring it up as wel, i'll try closing and reopening it a few times and see if it fixes it.

Did some systematic killing of processes until the problem went away. For me it is the vive dashboard, killing "ViveDashboard.exe" immediately resolves the problem.

I can only assume that entering the dashboard would sometimes cause vive dashboard to fix itself.

Going to SteamVR -> Settings -> Applications and unselecting Vive Dashboard stops it from starting and hooking in leading to smooth gameplay for me.

Maybe preventing Oculus Home running might help here too then

I have a 980ti with the same amount of ram and cpu. I ovvasionally get some choppiness as well, but it has never made it unplayable for me. I found making sure I wasn't running any kind of super sampling in oculus tray tool helped quite a bit.

I'm going to assume it's the 970, since I know that card has a lot of controversy over it. I built a gaming rig for a buddy, and we had one ASUS STRIX 970 DOA, with the replacement dying a week after it was received. I don't trust that card at all.

I have an i5 4690K, 8GB RAM, and a GTX 1060 and I have zero issues. I know it's not very helpful, but my suggestiong would be upgrade your card.

I have a GTX 970 and the game performs flawlessly.

970 isn't an issue for any of my games in Oculus. seems this only happens for Steam VR games.

But thanks anyways :)

I recently upgraded my 760 for a 1060 to come to the following:

Oculus Touch
2x sensors
i5-3470
760GTX
8Gb RAM

Now the game is very playable (and damn it is awesome) but there's a ton of ASW at times, indicating that optimisation is still a big thing target, for what I assume is a fairly low Def VR game.

So i fired up the game today on a whim - i see there have been some updates for it since i last tried it.

Happy to report 0 screen tear and I was actually able to play. My hardware hasn't changed since last time - so props to the dev for working on it.

Excellent news! I since got a Rift + Touch myself and noticed the framerate tanks if tracking is not set up properly (I moved the sensors around on the desk a bit). Running the sensor set up again seemed to fix the issue.
