How is the PC port these days?

I've heard a lot of negative things about this port over the years, but I also heard a lot of the issues got fixed in updates. I never played Chrono Trigger, and I've heard that the DS version is better, but would this version be fine for a first playthrough?

well it is way better now, didnt have any bugs in my playthrough, but the ds version is still 100x better.

I just played through the game for the first time on Steam a couple months ago. The only issue I had was with the sound. It came out pretty distorted through just my speakers, but I saw a tip online that said using headphones fixes it and that worked for me. The rest of the game ran perfectly fine the entire time

i have it on ds and steam, ill probably play it on steam but out of curiosity what makes the ds version better?

I just tried to play and the keyboard controls are acting weird. When I move down it automatically moves back up.

I found what the problem was. I had an old Buffalo gamepad plugged in.

This happened to me as well and I wasn't able to find a fix. I ended up emulating it instead. It used to work fine, and I never changed my OS or hardware, so I'm still unsure why it won't work.

The biggest issue when the pc port was released was that there was a very ugly filter on the game's graphics rather than leaving the graphics as they were.

This is still on the store page's screenshots but over time they've slowly been updating the port to improve it, it might be worth looking at the update news posts to see what was actually changed since the original release.
I'd say the screenshots on these represent what the game looks like now a lot better than what the store page shows.

I'd say it's in pretty good state now unless you have some absolute preferences for how the SNES or DS versions look.
