Is there something wrong with the Steam version of Giga Gaia?
I've watched videos online and read walkthroughs but this guy is able to get 6 hits AND a heal off by the time I'm still trying to select what I want for my second attack.

He also does not seem to be limited by the rules of the game as he can just attack at will (I have it set to be turn based attacks, not real time).

I'm dead after about 30 seconds and don't even have a chance. What gives?

It did about 850 damage, and before I can get a second hit off Ayla is usually dead.

I've never seen such speed before.

You have to destroy his arms. The left is the Attack arm and the right is the Defense arm (this is the one that heals, and will heal regardless of if the left is still alive). Using Falcon Strike (Crono and Ayla) is the most effective way of destroying the arms quickly. You can bring Ayla along to Charm off his Speed Tab (head) off of him too, if you find he's too quick.

Also, he does insane Fire and Shadow damage with the hands, so equipping something for that should help. If i remember right, the Red/Black Mail & Vests will work great.

I'd suggest Crono, Ayla and Frog* as a party. Attack with your best single techs ONLY when the head is alive, so ♥♥♥♥ like Leap Slash and Cat Attack are great. And every time the arms revive, they should be weaker than before.

*I don't remember anyone else being very good here, but feel free to swap Frog out with someone else (do not swap out Ayla or Crono).

EDIT

Oh, wait. Crono, Marle and Lucca with Triple Tech of Delta Force 6-7 times back to back will easily defeat Giga Gaia too, but if he's too fast for you, I wouldn't recommend this strategy.

Nope. This guy was always overpowered on snes too. First time i fought him on snes, he unexpectly kicked my butt too..luckily there is a save point before him which i used and farmed those rock creatures to learn more techs. Then i kicked his butt with a dual tech. I think this part is supposed to be like this, like a point of testing if the player has some good techniques by now. If not, you have to go farm those rock creatures on the mountain of Woe.

No that boss is straight up a test for how good your team is. Turn based still allows the enemies to attack at will, all it does is when your scrolling through the inventory, or your tech list, he can't do new attacks (though if he was already doing an attack, he will still continue it). You can test this yourself by just going into your item list and just sit there for a minute, nobody will attack in that time if you're on wait mode.

Tips for beating him, take out the hands as fast as possible and he loses his big attacks for a bit. I recommend the falcon hit attack with Chrono and Ayla, and then use marle for healing. He's just a super tough boss is all

Thanks to all who replied.

I grinded for 3 levels and just got my timing down. The fight is all about pushing the correct button quickly enough and healing in between.

Yes, he is very easy to beat for anyone who has sufficiently leveled enough, however most players will be under prepared or under leveled if they either never grinded anywhere in the game (like the jungle for all the gear), or avoided any encounters.

That's right in any RPG if you spend enough time to grind to be high enough level, anyone is easy. Thanks for letting us know how RPGs worked.

This is a wall in the game for low leveled characters. Just like Magus was. You may just need to grind a tad.
