It did about 850 damage, and before I can get a second hit off Ayla is usually dead.
I've never seen such speed before.
Also, he does insane Fire and Shadow damage with the hands, so equipping something for that should help. If i remember right, the Red/Black Mail & Vests will work great.
I'd suggest Crono, Ayla and Frog* as a party. Attack with your best single techs ONLY when the head is alive, so ♥♥♥♥ like Leap Slash and Cat Attack are great. And every time the arms revive, they should be weaker than before.
*I don't remember anyone else being very good here, but feel free to swap Frog out with someone else (do not swap out Ayla or Crono).
EDIT
Oh, wait. Crono, Marle and Lucca with Triple Tech of Delta Force 6-7 times back to back will easily defeat Giga Gaia too, but if he's too fast for you, I wouldn't recommend this strategy.
Tips for beating him, take out the hands as fast as possible and he loses his big attacks for a bit. I recommend the falcon hit attack with Chrono and Ayla, and then use marle for healing. He's just a super tough boss is all
I grinded for 3 levels and just got my timing down. The fight is all about pushing the correct button quickly enough and healing in between.
train your heroes and it will pass by itself
Yes, he is very easy to beat for anyone who has sufficiently leveled enough, however most players will be under prepared or under leveled if they either never grinded anywhere in the game (like the jungle for all the gear), or avoided any encounters.
That's right in any RPG if you spend enough time to grind to be high enough level, anyone is easy. Thanks for letting us know how RPGs worked.
