New Orleans: Overhead Crane is Broken (Progress-Killer, or...?)
Our guy Billy mutters something about the overhead crane being the only way across, so I retrace my steps and power up the crane...and as loud and clumsy ponderous-sounding clanking noises are generated, NOTHING is visibly moving; nothing is happening.

Is the crane glitched broken, or is there something I haven't been told about getting to the other side so I can progress along the storyline?

This is a story-killing bug/glitch. I watched a video, and the crane is supposed to move forward; mine just makes pathetic noises. I verified game cache, so there's no file corruption. I'm loading an earlier save to see if it's perma-broken. If it is, then I'll have to start an entirely NEW game to see if it's still broken. That's gonna take me a couple of days.

From every single New Orleans save I have, the crane is broken, and will not move after powering up. I'm going back to my last Roswell save to start New Orleans again all over from scratch...but I'm pretty damned sure that gawdamned crane will still be broken when I get to it. Failing that, I'll have to scrap all my save files and start a new game...but I'm skeptical. Looks like I'll have to submit a ticket to Bethesda, but I think we all know just how fruitful THAT will prove.

Anyone know how to turn off collisions or how to superjump? I've searched 304 variable change parameters in the console command, and there's nothing pertaining to either.

Oh, wait! I just thought of something: Maybe if I choose that Battle-Walker contraption instead of the Constrictor Harness, maybe I can manage a jump up to effectively cross the Great Hall...(heavy sigh)...right now I am occupied enduring all those BORING and unavoidable cutscenes after getting captured in Mesquite.

Edit
When I selected the very last Roswell save that I had made, it didn't take me to Roswell, it took me back to right before Mesquite, WAY before Roswell. There's something wrong with this game that is not detected by game cache validation/verification. Whatever; I'm working my way forward with the Battle Walker contraption until I get to the broken crane in Louisiana.

I'll try that when I (Eventually!) get back there.

I gotta tell ya: I was extremely skeptical, especially after still finding the crane broken. Does SHIFT+W+SPACE+UP ARROW work ONLY if you have Battle Walker contraption? I was puzzled, because this key combination doesn't work from the bus closest to that objective. Maybe it only works if starting point for the long jump is higher than the destination? It certainly is much further away than the bus.

It doesn't matter what contraption you have you can still long jump from up stairs across. I have my movement keys bound to my arrow keys.

Best of luck.

Well, it worked. Thanks.

You need to actually enter the crane housing, activate the speed lever and push forward until you reach the other side.

Get in the crane, activate, AND press walk forward.

For those Encountering this problem for the first time

I know this is an old thread, so could any wise guy who likes to point out that it is an old thread, please don't, as I know it is, and it is always good to have more than one method known?

I know the Author has marked it as the given Answer, but when you Activate the Crane, try using the UP ARROW or the W to move forward. This saves you from trying to master that jump.

Activating the Crane and then pushing the Forward Key got the Crane moving ;) Well for me.
