The contraption to choose depend on your playstyle.
I personnally like the constrictor harness because it unlocks a 1 sec slowdown when you get detected while playing stealthy, which give you time to headshot someone or hide.
Ram shackle is more offensive.
And the last one unlock the ability to retain up to 200 health if you dont take damages.
As for completion, if youbdon't choose Battle Walker, it is the last one you can get in assasination missions as it is only available in the second to last mission. As you progress through the game you'll be able to get all the contraptions very easily and you should only consider your first choice from set purely for it's effectiveness in battle and utility as explained above.
Every time I would use the battle walker to get to high places it merely felt like a small shortcut. You can easily tell there are other ways to reach most places, either via other contraptions or just regular paths, so that aspect didn't feel particularly useful.
