[SPOILERS] Missed opportunity with BJ's childhood
You know the mission where BJ revisits his childhood home in Mesquite? Where you have to look around the house, and see a bunch of cutscenes of his childhood?

The memory of BJ's dad, Rip Blazkowicz, giving him a BB gun and joining him to scare the monsters away from the basement really makes me think that Machine Games was trying to make it seem like deep down, even through the abuse, Rip really cared a lot about his son. I really wish that some of the cutscenes explored this further.

Instead, players are just left with the impression that Rip was no more than a horrible man. I really think it would have been better to show more of his caring side so players would have to think and develop their own opinions of Rip's parenting, whether positive or negative. Instead, he really seemed like more of an abusive strawman than a father with serious issues.

If that's the way of Rip cares, I would totally hate to see how he hates.

It's just one cutscene. It's really sweet, though. Billy's having nightmares about monsters in the basement, so Rip gives him a BB gun, grabs a shotgun, and takes him downstairs to shoot all the monsters and show Billy that they have been "scared away". In the end, you see Billy sleeping soundly and nightmare-free with his BB gun.

It's really out of place when you see how downright abusive and horrible Rip is. It would have been great if there were more cutscenes showing that while he was a really harsh parent, he still cared. This would create a great internal conflict for the player. Do they feel bad for Rip, or do they hate him?

Instead they just made him an evil and nastry strawman.
Honestly I thought that Rip was one of the more interesting characters. He cared about his son ultimtely and wanted to see him raised right. What he did was what he genuinely believed would toughen BJ up and make him a "real man" - though in actual fact it turned out to be abuse.
