Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Fix for black screen with sound bug.
Long story short, ran the demo 3 weeks ago with no issues. Tried it again just before xmas and it just wouldn't work.

I asked myself what on my system had changed? Only nvidia driver and a steam client update came to mind.

Rolled nvidia driver back to the driver that worked before, but the game still wouldn't run past the splash screens. I then noticed something interesting; there was now a warning pop up when the game was launched telling me to update my driver. This wasn't there before, which led me to wonder if the game had been patched at any point.

I then remembered thart Doom 2016 had a conflict with the steam overlay at one point which made it flicker and unusable (could open it but never close it again).

So I did this; i disabled the steam overlay for the wolf demo and lo and behold, the game actually loaded up correctly. I then read a note from a previous patch that stated "async disabled until driver hits"

So I disabled async compute in the game's graphics settings and now the game works correctly whether the overlay is enabled or not.

TL:DR: disable the steam overlay for the game before it launches, disable async compute in the game's setings, and then you can turn the overlay back on if you wish.

Hope this helps someone as its been driving me nuts.

lol I just recalled this workaround recently. Glad it worked for you. This needs to be stickied since a lot of people have the same problem and this is the only fix.

I have a strange question... How do you disable async for the game if you can't get the game to launch? Is there a setting you can edit in any of the .cfg files that will do this?

All I was finally able to do was to get the game past the update lock and launch to a black screen once I disabled the STEAM overlay on the properties panel. I could hear sound, music, etc but could only get a black screen. I had to "Alt+Tab" to get out of it and even then clicking on the task bar box for the game would not close it right away.

I am running Windows 7 SPk 1 with the latest updates to my video, sound, and have 8GB of system memory, 2 gigs of video memory (nVidia 950). My CPU is an AMD 8 channel 4.0Ghz.

for me, disabling the steam overlay for the game by right clicking on it and choosing "properties" allows it to bypass the black screen and get to the title screen normally. you can then disable async compute in the game's graphic settings. the steam overlay can then be re-enabled.

How come you never installed Service Pack 2 ? It's called the convenience update for Windows 7.

Can you please go to Steam -> Click on help up there -> System information -> Cut and paste it here.

STEAM overlay is and always has been disabled on ALL my library of games. So. There has to be something more since I am still stuck with the black screen even after verification of overlay
being disabled and running the verification test with all files being good.

And for the second responder, Samael.. There never has been a service pack 2 for Windows 7.
I even double checked to see if there was any kind of update for Windows 7 that was related to any kind of convenience update for Windows 7 that I did not already have installed. None found.

So SenMithrarin85's response was accurate.

I just have had enough from it. I uninstalled it and cleared any information from my registry for the demo so that it won't plague me any longer. Too many players reporting the same issues only to be ignored by the developers is a sign that it's not worth buying since the developers don't care to follow up with player compaints about such issues.
