Can't get to command center in New York

In 'New Suit' section, after working through NY towards to bunker on the way to the command center for the New Orleans dossier...

I have the 'constrictor' gadget. After getting into the bunker and getting to the point beyond the robot dogs and turning doors I get to the room with the lift (elevator). I can get through the grate on the right to behind the lift but I can't get through the next grate into the lift shaft. I know how to use the constrictor (crouch, look down, walk ahead) but it isn't working on this last grate. What am I missing?

Alternatively, is there a way to go back to the point where you choose which gadget you want so I could try with another one that would work better? I don't have any save slots from the beginning of New Suit so I'd have to go all the way back to Roswell and that's an awful lot of stuff to re-play. Can you choose to start a level another way?

You can load a save from before choosing which one. I picked the the Battle legs so idk what is wrong.

I think you will be able to find rest of the offered gear in your further gameplay.
I found the constrictor having chosen the legs.
As to the OP - just look around, there is a way for any gadget.

Sounds simple, but try looking good at the map to see if there is a darker (unexplored) shaded outline that looks like a vent to where you need to go. Or try clicking the location way point button while looking around where you're stuck to see if you're missing something.

If given the chance, always go for the walker upgrade though. The constrictor vest is the earliest you can find on your own and having 200 overheal plus health restored on kills makes it the best device.

But I know where I need to go. There is only one way down. Got to get into the lift shaft. Can be done via 3 methods depending on which gadget you have: Crash through vent grates, crawl under/through vent grates, or use legs to get to upper platform and crawl into the lift shaft. So it is just that I can't crawl through that 2nd grate.

If I have to I'll load from back in Roswell, but I'd really hate to have to go through the end of that level, the farmhouse, and the courthouse again. The courthouse took a long time...

I decided to just go back and re-play to the point where you choose the gadgets and got battle legs this time. Made it through the command center just fine with them.

I found where you get through.. go back through the first grate near the elevator you were able to go under, walk past that cart in front of the elevator and along the wall near the corner, there is a small hole near the floor you squeeze under... this constrictor contraption is dumb, only works on certain and very few grates, there are like 6 grates on this level, including one that leads to collectibles.. you cannot go through them with constrictor, just the one nearest the elevator but not the next as you know
