144hz, game resets desktop refresh to 60hz
The game can be run without VSync for me with a high framerate in the 100's. It has terrible tearing. With it enabled on or adaptive, I'm limited to 60 however, instead of the 144 I should be getting. Slightly aggrivating but manageable in itself.

The primary issue I am having, however, is that in doing so, closing out of the game my refresh rate will still very obviously be locked at 60hz. My NVidia control panel says it is at 144hz still, but it isn't ACTUALLY providing it unless I switch the setting out and then back to it.

In other words, the game is screwing over my systemwide refresh.

I have a GTX 1080. My drivers are up to date.

Is this already a known issue? Anyone else having similar experiences?

One way to fix it is to force "Highest available" under "Preferred refresh rate" in the Nvidia control panel (see this screenshot[i.imgur.com]). That fixed it for me and now I'm running in 144Hz mode w/ unlocked framerate.

Awesome, that did it. Thanks!

Some games might break from this, so I recommend setting it in the program settings just for Wolfenstein. Didn't test if it still puts it to 60 hz for desktop though.

what about for AMD graphics card?

Same situation here for AMD card. Desktop resets back to 60hz after launching the game. Changing the game option vsync off and relaunch in 144fps desktop will revert back to 60fps. Any idea?

update: Adrenalin 20.1.4 fixed the issue somehow, 144Hz + Freesync now works on both fullscreen and borderless mode.

Managed to fix it myself though not exactly as described. It seems that changing any in game option regarding v-sync (off, on or adaptive) will make your monitor change its refresh rate to 60 Hz.

For monitors with higher refresh rate and adaptive sync (freesync or g-sync), you switch the in game v-sync option to adaptive. Close the game, right click desktop -> Display Settings -> chose the monitor you are running the game on, if you have more than one -> Advanced display settings (it's a link at the bottom) -> change refresh rate to desired. Start the game.
If it doesn't work try to restart your pc and check again above settings, in game and otherwise.

To confirm that adaptive sync is on check for tearing by looking for straight vertical lines and wobbling your view left-right. If vertical lines break with your movement, adaptive sync is not on.

You can check your fps with the in game performance metric.
The game doesn't seem to like performance overlays from your drive package or third parties but you can try these as well.
