whizbang poppers saving leah

i feel like im stupid or something with these things. when it comes time to throw one i open the inventory and click throw one then hold down right mouse to throw it but the meter never shows up except maybe 1/10th of the time and it will just drop on the ground. am i just that stupid on throwing them or is it a bug?
