1) What version of the game are you running?
2) What version of Windows, and is it 32 or 64-bit?
3) Are you loading the original story or a custom story?
We've seen a few players have this issue if (this is all very generic, mind you):
A) their antivirus or security software isn't letting the game access a file it needs.
B) Your Windows account for some reason can access core game files but not all story related files.
C) 32 bit systems not playing nice with the game or other system applications.
D) Hardware issues or file corruption.
1)I looked in the Betas menu and chose the one that says "betas - beta branch"
2)64-bit
3)Original Story
One thing you could try right away is making sure you've got exceptions added for HouseParty.exe in your anti-virus/security software, and also for the Documents\Eek folder and all its subfolders and files.
Alright, another question: have you ever seen a red text/error message at the top of the Title Screen, right above "Start New Game"?
Steps you can try:
1) Make sure you've got exceptions added for HouseParty.exe in your anti-virus/security software, and also for the Documents\Eek folder and all its subfolders and files.
2) Ensure that your graphics/GPU drivers are updated.
3) Go into the folder shown below and COPY (do not move or cut) both the HouseParty_Data folder and the HouseParty.exe file to your desktop, and run HouseParty.exe as an Administrator by right-clicking on the copied file on your desktop and selecting Run as Administrator.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\House Party
3a) ensure your anti-virus/security software is allowing the new/copied process to run from your desktop.
