Explicit DLC now costs money?
Can't find any thread on this so here goes.

I bought this game back on release or something and was thinking of revisiting it now. However, it seems like the game has been censored and requires dlc to uncensor it. However, this DLC isn't free anymore?

Also, let me ask this. If you had your way as a developer and you were able to sell this game completely uncensored and totally open on the market like any other game, would you still feel the need to charge this extra five dollars for this "extra content" in some fashion? How would you hypothetically go about this in this situation?

I know this is all hypothetical, but it would really help us understand where your motivations lie.

And all that say a lot about this industry, I've never seen a DLC to add violence and gore to a game, but all game with sex are released with built in censorship option, often activated by default, but it never seem to be enough.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure we're all on the same page with this one. It's just the clueless politicians and activist groups that are pulling the strings. I get keeping this kind of content away from children, but there should be better ways of going about it.

Well that's a very American point of view, in France, we'd rather protect children from seeing a murder than a nipple. And feminist groups protest by publicly showing their breasts.
Of course, like everywhere else in the world, prudishness is on the rise, but we are still far from the US.
In Europe, a game with nipples would be PEGI 12 (The Void for exemple) while as soon as there is a murder of a human (monsters are ok to kill), it's PEGI 16.

But I suppose the industry is mostly shaped for the American market (with China taking more and more importance, which won't solve anything).

I bought 'House Party' back in 2017 and installed it. I believe that I also downloaded and installed the AO patch at that time. I do not think the AO patch was available on Steam then; I believe it was only available on the Dev's website or some such. I missed the announcement of the AO Patch going paid and also the window for getting it free via Steam (since I believed I already had it). Is there any way to verify or ascertain whether or not I actually have the patch? It is not listed separately on my Steam Acct. Licenses and product key activations list (or I don't know what its listing is named) since I didn't get it through Steam.

Yes, hit us up on Discord, and we will help you out here. :)

Good question.

No. We wouldn't. However, it's a lot more complicated than some people are making it out to be, and we had a very hard time making a decision on this. We are also taking the time to reply (to civil feedback) because we care deeply about our players, and we like to be transparent about things, as always.

What we would love, is if the industry would treat the AO rating like a REAL rating, and not the "kiss of death" in the video game world. Most platforms simply won't sell a game with an AO rating, and even on the platforms that do, the rules change constantly, threatening the continued success of the product. If we were able to sell only one version of the game and keep a viable business model, we would. Our decision to add the charge onto the explicit content stems from the large amount of players who own the base game, but are not interested in the patch. We see this trend on and off Steam, so it's nothing to do with the visibility of AO products on Steam. The small extra cost covers the extra work associated with maintaining two products.

Regardless of what some people think, this game has a LOT of players who are simply not interested in the explicit aspect of it. We've put a lot of love and care into the core game just as much as we have the content in the Explicit DLC, and that hard work is paying off with opportunities that are forming on the horizon for us. We already have a major celebrity joining the cast, who is one of the top 10 streamed artists globally on Spotify in 2022, and we have more surprises coming very soon.

We aren't at liberty to discuss everything we have in the works just yet, but be on the lookout for some very big and cool news dropping in the near future.

A few other things to clear up; We are not trying to make an "all ages version". We are going as raunchy and as edgy as possible in the M version. It will still have nudity, sex scenes, and anything else we can get away with.

The success of this game challenges the hypocrisy of distribution platforms and services like Twitch who ban anything sexual, and glorify violence, but then also make exceptions when convenient. What we would love to see, is fair treatment of this type of content for all developers, and as we keep pushing the limits and standards continue to change, we will update our base product to continue pushing the limits. Our goal (other than just making a fun and raunchy game for people to enjoy) is, and always has been to be a challenge to that double standard, and to let the players decide what type of games they want to play, not the industry. If one day we, with hopefully the help of other studios, accomplish that goal, then there would be no need for a patch to begin with.

Bottom line; We have big opportunities in front of us, and instead of selling out and dropping the adult content, we have made a commitment to our audience to keep making the content that so many of you enjoy. There will be growing pains and decisions you may not all agree with, but the end result will be more and better content from us, and more acceptance of the type of content we have to offer in the mainstream.

So, I've bought the game, played it, had fun, and forgot about it for some time. Now, turns out I have to pay extra, just to get my game into a proper working order again? Seriously? It's a scummy move Eek! Games.

If you owned the game/DLC prior to the price increase, you don't have to pay anything extra for the patch. If you are having an issue or the patch isn't showing up in your library, contact us on Discord, and we can help you out with that!
is discord the only way to get support? seems a bit unprofessional. I contacted you guys by email like 5 days ago and no answer.

We usually try to answer any form of contact, but we have a ticket system on Discord, and it's the fastest way to get help.

So that's it, in fact, people who buy the adult content are funding the extra cost of having an all age version...

it's not at all what you previously told us, anyway it's always sounded like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Like suddenly, the adult content has become an extra cost because it became bigger ? Yeah, that's what happen in an early acess, things tend to grow bigger than when they weren't there...

Initially, the DLC patch’s purpose was simply to uncensor any nudity or sexual content in the game, but since then a lot of the mature content has been moved from the base game to the Explicit DLC patch. We are also now developing bigger, longer, and explicit cutscenes specifically for that content patch.

Because of this, and because we plan to add more content specifically to the Explicit DLC patch, we will soon be adding a small charge for the DLC patch.
Love the excuses they give. Glad I found this thread, these devs are now blacklisted for me and never will they get more money from me.

Well, I tried following your instructions, only to be told there was nothing that you could do, and pointed to a page where the "universal installer" that does the same thing as the DLC can be purchased for $4.99 - Not exactly the "you don't have to pay anything extra" I would have expected.

This game is a little more than just "a nipple". I agree that nudity shouldn't require an AO rating, and that extreme violence shouldn't be presented to children either. And there can already be nudity in M rated games.

But are you seriously suggesting that children should be exposed to literal pornography? Do you really want to put that on record?
Also, the Statue of David has his ♥♥♥♥ on full display in Animal Crossing, an E-rated game. That's something that I still can't wrap my head around. Why is nudity okay in classic art (and what even constitutes "art" anyways), but not modern art?

You see, now I can get this. It would have helped to be straight forward up front. If it's just a matter of extra costs introduced by Steam's ever-changing regulations, then just stick to that instead of trying to dress it up with "all the cool new stuff" that you're going to give us.

Still, I feel like raising the price of the base game would have been better. People expect an early access game to raise in price when it goes full release. That's the benefit of investing in it early. They don't expect to have to pay for previously free content that is an essential aspect of the game. But I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree on that one.
