What exactly is the dark man?
Is he an entity or an agent that doesn't want you to escape from the reality? Could the company be trying to silence David so he couldn't leak the memories to the reality where the moon wasn't shattered yet?

It is one of the "Shadow People" first introduced in the Deep Sleep series and, as explained by Cate before using the sleeper pods, can occur when an entities mind does not have a new body to locate to and is lost in the "dream realm", searching for another body that wanders by

so could it have been David being attacked by one of his failed attempts at saving himself

I'm not sure it's possible since him getting stuck in the dream realm would result in him not being able to escape so it would end the loop that would eventually lead to the David we play as. So I would say no, for now at least

When I saw the title "What exactly is the dark man" I couldn't help but laugh and think "his name is Barry you racist" 😂

That can't be entirely true though, can it? We're talking about simultaneous infinite universes and time travel here (because you go back in time 4 days when you meld don't forget). Literally billions of Davids are all simultaneously accomplishing the same 4 day task at relatively the same times. I naturally assumed that our "prophet" visions were somehow a result of one of us witnessing a timeline eerily similar to ours where the only difference is us failing in that night, and that information is somehow linked to us through this massive web of inter-dimensional-time-travel.

So I figured the only reason we're surviving at all is because we're able to learn from our actual failures through the linking of universes through this dream realm. There is a sort of quasi-loop going on, because if it's simultaneous AND multiple universes than the loops you create aren't really loops... And yet, they are...

Then again maybe this writers version of multi-dimensional-time-travel is different than my version.. maybe his doesn't allow for simultaneous existences but more of echo existences that rotate through existence synchronized, but offset somewhat (perhaps helping to explain why some universes were super advanced and others not, and why we can see our alternate futures).

Unsure overall, but I see no reason why the shadow person can't be a lost version of David trying to reclaim his existence unless the Developer states otherwise :P

I guess it's possible but what I was saying is that the version of David that we play as is consciously the same person throughout, just in different versions of his body. If at the end of every playthrough he sends his mind into the dream realm then he's technically the same David looping.

I like the theory that it is the consciousness of Davids that died and that's where he's getting the dreams, but I don't know if it's true. It would explain why the dark man is trying to possess David to get a second chance to survive. Maybe the David we play as is stronger than the Dark man David's though due to more experience sending his conscience to another world.

Feels like a reference to the stories about shadow people that humanity has been talking about since we sat around a fire and told stories!

Those are indeed shadow people cameo on the developer's past flash games Deep Sleep series.

Not much is explained except that they hunt and replace themselves to others people who is lost into their deep comatic sleeps into their dream realm.

It is then explained in the game by Cate and the clues you finds around about SP industry. In order to call in/summon people from other timeline universe is only possibly with the mind and not physically. So they use people on coma as patient under their free healthcare services to link up and have the person of interest from another timeline universe take over the patient instead. This however only meant the mind of that real person will never wake up, losing and forgetting their identity or humanity and is forced to look for others that unfortunate enough to slip in the realm of dream being shadow people themselves.

Or in case of when David asked Cate out. She said that they can either ended up in Limbo, world of dream. Or ended up in their new body in different world. And that said we do actually ended up new body but different world every events of disasters are different.
And since the computer is indeed malfunctioning I guess a lot of people that were sleeping in there are actually experiencing same issue and there might be those very unfortunate enough to not be able to made it into the new body of new world. Which is a mess.

Would the machine have been malfunctioning when the employees from Bus C arrived at the moon base, though?
