How do you do so much damage with the lightning gun?
I swear everyone talks about how good the lightning gun is but whenever I use it it just tickles the enemy even when I'm locked onto them and they pretty much just stare at me and kill me. Whenever I get shot by the lightning gun I just get zapped twice and then boom I'm dead.

It's hard to answer without observing footage from both situations (i.e. you being "locked onto" the opponent and "getting zapped twice"). It could be a matter of individual perspective.

Are you emoore143[dev.quake-champions.com]? That profile shows playing a champ who has a large hitbox (so easier to hit), while LG accuracy is closer to 20% than to 30%, often dipping into the 10-20% range. Also, considering the low amount of matches, dodging against LG may not be the strongest skill of that player yet.
Even if you are not emoore143, you can look up yourself on that site, and check your stats and the stats of opponents, including their playtime.

quake is about map control, even if you hit all your bullets ud need to build up stacks by picking items.
good players always have more stack than beginners like us, so we even have to hit more than them
you can die to 1-2 lightnings while the enemy takes 3-4 if you dont control any items

The lightning gun is one of the no skill auto pilot guns in the game. The true strength of the lightning gun is the distance advantage, the gun can practically be used halfway across the map and hit the enemy. You are supposed to fight your enemies from a distance, you are probably getting close to them and they are taking you out with the rocket launcher or shotgun.

machine gun and heavy machine gun are the once you are describing. LG is for mid range engagements which ends with a RG shot or for finishing your enemy after you made enough rocket dmg.

other then that the right dodge movement and some solid aim can work wonders for your efficiently using the LG by itself.

*1st, for me its all about how to understand a champs hit boxes. Who are you about to play against? BJ is a consider.
*2nd, Different game modes offer different circumstances. i.e FFA is range, have they taking enough hits to survive my LG? maybe need a rail or sg blast / Vs. team mode is map location and known power up/armor taken. But who took them??
Now back to Team mode , "the kill is for the team even If i assist". It's for the team, I dont think anyone on my team steals my frags. "hence the name". The point is awarded to the team. Insert Rails and MG/what ever I find applicable.
*3rd, 1v1 is self explanatory, as you corner the above for one and all.
If on any mode im near a revenge. well... see,.. you could be in my sights soon... LG is good, something might be better . and there is nothing else to be told. Have fun

Great aim and tracking. I am no good with LG, 30% is a good score for me.

It might be that they're stocked up on health and armor, and if they're killing you that fast then you might be low on armor. Focus on stacking up first, then pick your fights.

27% and a burn you can not commit to.

I have the exact same experience.

I am better at one shots, but I have drained a LG into people on a good night and they still kill me. Then when they get that tap, tap kill on you...it only bothers me because I know I was full health and good armor.

Sorry to talk about the SSG still. But I only use it when I am so close I wish I could melee first. Hit with the stock, stun them and then take the shot...hehehe My kills with the single barrel are still better.

Back to the LG, I have gotten killed even when I have had the quad. Then again, I don't even care about the quad anymore because it's just a distraction.

I know it's not for everyone and one mode can get boring. But I still stand by instagib and always will. You can have frustrating games in that too, like when no one is missing? ever?

Quake is fun when you find what works for you.

Lightning gun is definitely one of the more fun weapons to use in this game, but in my opinion gets overshadowed by rockets, Railgun and shotgun since years now...Rockets were always the strongest weapon in Quake for obvious reasons (mobility, splash damage, high DPS) and Railgun received a buff to 90 dmg per hit since some years, which was a really terrible decision imo. And yep, shotguns got buffed into oblivion since QL too, which makes the LG (unfortunately for me: my favorite weapon in Quake) the least appealing choice in most scenarios. I hit a good low 40+ avg these days and even then I get outdamaged by rockets and shotgun (+the occasional close up rail) most of the time at distances, that LG previously covered for 90% of times in QL for example. I can defo see OP's point here.

You mean the nerf from 100? :-)
There was a difference between unzoomed (80) and zoomed (100) damage, perhaps you have seen the zoom timer animation (it stayed for awhile even when it wasn't operational any more).
And yep, shotguns got buffed into oblivion.
Shotguns just got a slight nerf a month ago, damage per pellet gets reduced over distance.

All of this was compared to the weapon balance of QL. I follow QC since early stage too and was just trying to make a point why LG seems so weak to some players, who come from QL, including me. And compared to QL: Railgun and SG obviously are alot better, Rockets always were the strongest weapon in the game imho and still are, and therefor LG isnt as good as it used to be in QL, is what i was trying to say.

Yeah having 52+ average LG makes me an easy-aimbot from opponent's perspective. Especially if they are predictable targets for me.
