Thing is, original quake, maybe quake2, they went up in player count, or tried too. Not down. As in going from 16 player server to 32. This is Quake World. Team Fortress I think it found the sweet spot to be 16. 16 is the sweet spot.
Duels wasn't that popular in Quake too, honestly a mode you'd never think of, runequake, that is what the last popular Quake 1 servers that stood the test of time and popular mode to keep that game alive is. Clan Arena in Quake 1 died before CTF. Quake 1 duels wasn't that popular either.
If this game is trying to revive, its gotta go back to the OG Quake roots.
Having fun, not so much worried about matchmaking and where I stand on a leaderboard.
Also, more proof duels isnt that popular, clans. Why even make a clan if 1v1 is popular. Exactly you wouldn't. Clans is a iconic to Quake series. Nostalgia. Even if you wasn't in one, people knew about them. Knew they meant something, some were cool.
There was no leaderboard tracking how many times they won too. People just knew from observing from the games. This clan always does good.
I have to pick red or blue which team to join. This team has this clan on it, I like that clan, I'm going that team.
As for 1v1 its fun, once a year. Not as a game mode. Not as a fun game mode either. Its only fun in tournaments. Tournaments aren't fun if its always ongoing.
You take out the cash prize and put it into team mode. Those people that 1v1 serious, they not gonna do those for fun unless its like a practice for skills. but they only doing it for the money, its not fun.
Trying to get everyone to do 1v1, hows QC doing right now. Exactly.
Go back to your roots. The roots of Quake. It sure aint 1v1s.
Quake term fragfest, that isn't from anything related to 1v1.
I wonder how fragfest came to be. Maybe it was because 16 players and spawn and seeing people fragged everywhere.
I got to say most of my time in Quake1, it was with that puny shotgun, fighting off someone fighting me after I just spawned. It wasn't with rocket launcher, rocket launcher has the best memories but most of my time, thinking about it, puny shotgun trying to survive and trying to obtain the rocket launcher or working my way up to frag someone who has it to get their BACKPACK and get the RL via that way because not every server had it available, servers had where you had to wait for it to spawn.
The only reason why backpacks are unique in Quake is because you can get an RL via that way, and feeling picking up a good beefy backpack lots of ammo good guns. Its great! So seeing a backpack, its like a lootbox you don't know whats in it, so its exciting, unless you are the one that fragged someone and you know what they have. Which is also great if they were loaded.
Anyways, go back to the roots. Why keep making more 1v1 stuff. If this game is trying to comeback. Go higher in player count. Been saying that. They been doing opposite.
Look at the state of QC, did it ever reach greatness too. Exactly. Maybe you are doing everything but what you should be doing. Go back to the roots of Quake, It's not just making a shambler mask, I'm talking gameplay game design game vision roots.
Going back to the roots of Quake will bring back the community and make it stronger.
