Excellent multiplayer and Graphic engine which were used in tones of great titles.
For example Jedi Knight 3 Academy runs on modified version of Q3 engine.
Also previous Quake game.
Also for engines.
Did you know that one of devs Mr. Cormac invented way to prevent GPU from rendering graphic all around the player and instead to render it only in players field of vision?
Without it most of games we are running at 80 fps would ran at 25.
Quake is the first shooter I know which were allowing players to use some more than most basic physics (rocket jumps!).
Quake games were one of the first shooters which tried to tell story.
Quake 4, Quake live, Quake Champions are all worthwhile titles but even all of them together did less for gaming than any of Q1-3.
Quake 2 was also awesome online with just as many mods, mdls, and maps.
Funniest thing I remember from that one is the spam can cannon that sang spam songs.
I did beat Quake 1 once.
Eventually I heard about Quake Live and found some time to play again. I remember some tricks but I get my spleen handed to me there.
Then I heard about QC and tried to fight the urge to play it but yeah I guess nows a better time than ever to dabble into gaming again...
Any other Quake game I haven't got around to.
I know some players say Quake 3 got too colorful and further from the dark gothic themes but hey that game was fuuuuuuun to a lot of us. When I think Quake 3 I think roflgaunts from the time Like the time I IP hopped (ip's could get linked via console back then) from one server to another and fought clan <^^^>pummel. Many were pummeled that day. Much rofl spam filled the console chat.
At that point I knew that I had to do other things with my life beyond this strange experience.
Quake 3 because of all the laugh riots I had with players who had fun when it exploded. Lot of good times staying home with a cold drink ;) instead of going out those weekends...
Yep Q3A taught me a lot about competitive gaming and just for fun gaming
Q4 is best Doom 3 clone. Though I really dig its SP, story, overall design and horror. Some parts of it are even scarier than Doom 3.
QC is best multiplayer arena shooter ever. I guess it's my fav Quake too.
Best quake so far. And it's MP still amazing
QC for the modern feeling.
