Yeah, that thing killed the new Unreal Tournament; you had too few people actively searching for a match and too many lollygagging either in the oldskool-style browser or in the hubs.
thats not what killed UT LOL
Starting servers with half-cooked matches (map and mode picked by the first few players) then hinting players in queue, and with similar levels, that wanting this mode with this map may get them into a match faster, could be some middle ground. Just, from the perspetive of costs, it is for sure more expensive to have players wait in a fully operational match, than having them wait in a menu. Plus the wait ("warmup") can be really long this way, like if 4 players manage to start some obscure mode-map combination, it can be hard to find another 4 players for them.
I couldn't agree more, I've been asking for server binaries for community hosted servers/LAN/offline bots even before the closed beta started.
For the people that have good routing to the servers and live in regions where QC is popular I don't know if it would be such a big improvement.
But for the others that have lag even when practicing with bots, because bot matches are also online, it would make a huge difference.
I have been lucky enough to be able to try out QC on LAN and I can tell you it's a much better experience than online, it's perfect.
I also wish there would be a time when we can also have many more community hosted servers over a wider geographical area alongside the official servers.
A time when lag to the official servers or a downed internet connection doesn't mean I'm locked out of the game completely.
A time when we can play with LAN like pings with the people in the same town / ISP as you.
Until that time comes, all we can do is support the game in its current state by buying the battle pass to keep the servers alive even if we don't need any of the cosmetic stuff.
Other than that, we can only hope..
So they have it ready just don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about what the community wants, nice
I agree with what's been stated here. Overall, it would be a boon to the community at large to get people in your situation, actively playing the game. However it could be done, would be beneficial for everyone. The game simply has such a small player base at this point, that locking out part of the community is pure suicide.
But they seem more bent on protecting their intellectual property, or at least what's left of it, over allowing anyone access to the precious gaming code.
I think they would rather allow everything here to perish, before allowing any of that. That's really unfortunate, because some really cool "mods" could be created by the community at large, maps also.
In a perfect world, they would simply be making the engine, and some basic content, allowing the community to drive development of the rest. (as the days of old).
Have you ever tried to using a gaming VPN? It might be worth looking into.
Nowadays I don't have such big issues with it, but I personally know two people (for whom I bought Scalebearer packs ( =before the game went f2p there was a pack that granted you Scalebearer besides Ranger) that quit because of connectivity issues.
There were also guys from South Africa playing on our EU servers. You could easily tell when you had one of these players because they had 200 - 250 ping and the game would run like crap for all of us, regardless of ping.
Initially I didn't understand what was the deal but one of them explained that this is the only way they can play after their server was shut down.
As for me, I mostly have it ok, but there are some days when it's just not playable.
A VPN can improve things sometimes, but I've noticed that other times even with a VPN things are not ok which actually means that during those times it's the servers or some part of the route that is the same even with a VPN.
I still have faith that someday SyncError will provide us the tools to have a complete game just as he did for Quake Live.
He's the reason we still have Quake Champions running today.
yeah and in the most inefficient and infuriating way.
not having a server browser was the main thing that stopped me playing this game along with the garbage engine that constantly got me killed behind cover .
I mean i was willing to put with the garbage champions idea but at the bare minimum have good hitreg and a server browser.
They even released the source code of DOOM 3 BFG Edition just a few years after it's release so i think id would probably do it.
