How to unlock champions for free?

I'm new here. Noticed that in main menu are two types of currency: red shards and some silver coins. So, how to obtain them and can I spend them to get new champions?

The red shards are free and fairly fast to acquire in game (see below)

The silver coins (known as platinum) can be free and are generally slow to acquire in game or you can actually buy the stuff with real money in the Quake store (you can get there via one the overhead menu options in the game)...buying platinum is definitely not necessary though...you might choose to do it to help support the game or to acquire something "fast".

1) Each day you logon you get a reward
...if you do this 7 days in a row you'll end up with 5000XP, 5 shards, 100 platinum (the silver coins) and a "Reliquary" (a free "loot box") by the end of the week...you don't even need to actually play the game to get these rewards, just logon every 24 hours.

2) As you play the game, at the end of each match, you get experience points (XP)
...when you get enough XP you go up a level
...each time you go up a level you'll often get a reward which might be a shard (or several)
...very occasionally it might be platinum
...or it could be something else such as a shader or vanity item
...you can see what rewards you get for each level by clicking the battlepass icon from the overhead menu in game...there are two streams...the top one is free, everyone gets that...the bottom one is only if you have the "battle pass" (something you can buy with platinum in the store)

3) Also as you play the game, you'll complete challenges (eg. get 25 railgun kills...stuff like that)
...each time you complete a challenge you'll get more XP and sometimes you also get extra shards as well
...you can see what challenges are available and where you are with them by clicking the challenges icon from the overhead menu in game

Once you have 10 shards you can purchase one of the champions...again, you can do this from the store page (I think you can also do it directly from the champion selection page). Alternatively you can purchase an individual champion for 400 platinum or purchase the "champions pack" whereby you get ALL champions in one go for 2000 platinum...again, see the store page.

So, to directly answer your question
...the fastest way to unlock champions for free is to earn shards
...logon each day if you can
...play the game, level up and complete challenges as you go.
