If' dead means a small player base, yes, it has a small player base.
The system requirements are quite high for this game and that's part of the problem.
Many people want to heap criticism on the makers for every problem they encounter instead of figuring things out for themselves, or lack any type of practical computer knowledge about system specifications and or configuring the hardware requirements. Countless others simply lack the funds or whatnot to build a system capable of playing the game on any competitive level whatsoever.
Another big problem is the 300 lb gorillas in the room, ie player who've played this game for 10 or 20 years and are so good they can crush an entire room of new players by themselves. Make even mid level veteran players like myself look like girl scouts. The learning curve is steep here, it's not your typical shooter with a bunch of rookies playing.
Many people simply cannot hang, and get tired of their continual death, without the satisfaction of dishing it out, ever.
Last, there are some issues with the build, the lack of console, old school settings and way's of gaming that got left out of the build. The lack of custom private servers, map makers and Mod tools for community development. Many are disappointed in the lack of interest, or popularity of arena shooters in general and/or the chronic demise of this sort of classic PC genre.
Who was/is Yakumo
A game that is in early access and has technical problems and a small player base .... yes, it's dead.
The game has its problems, horrible design choices since none of us want any overwatch fortnite garbage style stuff in our game...but they thought it would work..it didnt. Yet the game is playable and comes as close to arena in 2019. You could also get quake live, but the only thing you could play there now is basically FFA or Instafreezetag. Instafreezetag is fun tho, and some very nice people playing it. So Either way you will go it will be a compromise.
The game as been in a state of neverending development limbo for almost Four Years including the Closed Beta before it entered Steam Early access Three Years ago.
The carcass is starting to rot and stink, they ignored the community by adding features that no one wanted, and poo poo'ed feature's that made previous Quake franchise (not including Quake 4) Great, like dedicated servers, community created maps, great community social features to name a few.
They decided to follow overwatch features like loot boxes a online eShop selling crap like weapon skins, that no one wanted, pumping thousands of dollars / pounds into payout price money to noname so called pro players that have failed in every instance to promote Quake Champions & gain no new players, during eSports tournaments, lackluster quarterly updates with a pointless boring battle pass, the most buggy Quake game engine that even John Romero (One of the original brains behind the Quake franchise) would be ashamed of.
Media outlets like PCGamer could see where this so called triple 'A' developer was going when they released this triple 'A' franchise onto steam early access, and here we are today PCGamer was right.
It has its problems but it doesn't deter me from playing.
Diabotical will have less players than this or even quake live after a year - sorry to break it to you. Its a dead game walking.
4 years lol - the game has enough problems you can highlight without having to make stuff up.
You've just added an extra year. The game has been in steam early access since August 2017. Last I checked that's 2 years. The beta was from April before that.
Yea but i dont know, i can find matches 24/7 at least tdm and some other basic stuff. I don't consider it dead. But how many players do you guys think a game need to need be dead 500- or even 1000?
