Even last update they attempted to make changes to help newer players move faster and the result was dumbed down mechanics that adversly affect players who already know how to strafe jump, so they have to be very careful.
Quake will survive on money. If Bethesda will invest enough in advertising the game (and i am confident they will), it will have enough players to keep the playerbase intact. But if it wont have more than at least 20k when the live games come out, it will be doomed.

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? Probably not bunny hopping around enough, or cirlce-strafing enough, or not timing out the armor pick-ups so I can always stay shielded.
Noobs) add me to friend, will play together
I watched only a fragment of your video, but from what I saw it seems to me that you often take fights where you have just the starting nailgun (arguably the worst weapon in the game - even among other starting weapons) and opponents dominate you by using better weapons like rocket launchers or lightning guns. On these occasions where you do grab these better weapons, you're actually doing quite well for a newbie. Learn the locations of major weapons on each map and how to get there quickly regardless of your respawn point. Then focus on getting these weapons and your score should improve.
Hey! Thanks a lot! Yeah...first thing I do when I spawn is try and head toward the rocket launcher, but if I come across someone, I usually engage in a fight. I find it very hard to escape other players if they see me (even if I play as one of the faster characters), so that's why I choose "fight" instead of "flight."
Also, I love the look of the Quake 1 nailgun, which is the main reason I use it, but...I guess I'll probably switch to the shotgun so I can practice making single, precise shots instead of spraying everywhere.

This Game is more friendly to casuals since everyone has a chance , it doesn't matter how much stack your opponent has . you get lucky he's dead. that in addition to the 3 kill Duel format and you have 50/50 chance of potentially hitting a rocket that's gonna win you a game.
Seriously wake up.
sure and thats why always the same pro gamers are at top. BECAUSE OF LUCK hahaha Seriously wake up ;)
Could you please share information about this magical weapon that will allow me to kill a fully stacked opponent instantly if I "get lucky"?...
... Or is someone here just being salty? :)
While most of these replies are correct in the sense that Quake is a game where you get more out of it the more you put into it, there's a difference between a high skill ceiling and a high skill floor. I've said it before, but Quake should be a game you can still jump into and have a good time with, without having to dive into advanced mechanics as a prerequisite before you can start having fun.
The recent changes to movement for most of the Champions (Galena and Scalebearer being the ones that changed the most, and have the most new player-friendly movement) is one area we found we could make an improvement for beginners. There are other things we're looking at too, not just in terms of game mechanics but in terms of matchmaking, AI, etc.
Just remember that even if you're getting fragged a lot when you first start out, eventually that starts to shift further in your favor as you learn more about the Champions, maps, weapons, and movement. :) There are a lot of really good community-made tutorials out there you might want to check out, and you can always set up some games with friends (or your friendly fellow players) to practice.
Good luck, and have fun!
