Quake never had nor will have a huge player base simply because not everyone can play it and master it. I had to play quake for years before becoming decent at duels and other competitive modes. However, the first time I played a game of PUBG, I ended up in top 10. Skill is involved in both games but much more in quake, where luck plays a very small part.
Nope. That was 72 hours.
And yes , it's more interesting than wondering that you'll meet 2 turrets on enemy flag base where your team is filled with 2 bots keeping eyes on your weapon skin.
That being said, even though I dont think they play that similarly, AL does have really good movement and combat mechanics in its own right and I'm having a absolute blast with it. Its the first BR I've really enjoyed and is a nice distraction while I wait for the devs to figure out what they're going to do with QC as we wait for the next content patch in a couple of months... hopefully...
I also hope they dont make a Quake BR (not that I expect they are even thinking about it), I just cant see it working well unless they move away from the Q3 style (probably for similar reasons Respawn said wall running wasn't fun in BR, too much mobility doesn't lend itself to BR) and do more of a ET:QW type game again but I would prefer they just made ET:QW 2 though. AL is fun because it hits the sweet spot for me between fast(ish) action and methodical, tactical gameplay.
-Spawn with no weapon or character weapon class. Fly in and scavenge like you do for health and ammo.
-Although revive is advertised, it's nowhere to be found. One shot at the battle, return to main menu like all other BR.
-Characters seem to have bravado in the intro screens, getting into the game, that disappears and is reduced to a teen like theme or anime. It's like they could not decide between adult and teen theme, so they went down the middle.
-No real action, claims to be fast paced. I did nothing but run around empty maps until I found one opponent.
I get it's free, but that is probably my last attempt at BR. Not for me. Whatever they are "taking over" isn't going to include me.
I'm not the best at Quake but I know I can at least have good games. I tried maybe 8 rounds of Apex and all of them I died within moments of getting started. And that isn't fun to die, then wait, then leave and start another match just to perhaps have that happen again and again. And that's the thing with BR games is your survival is based on what items you randomly get at the start. Set weapon spawn areas, you know exactly where to go and how to get it as long as you learn each map with Quake and UT. So I prefer arena type games how they are because everyone is using the same items as long as they choose to use them. Let's keep it that way.
Would like to say, that QC is likely to happen same what happen to Q3, where after its release Valves made Counter Strike on modified Q3 engine and further on smartly adapt it, for what bigger audience wanted in that moment. Now Q3 was still able to keep on rocking, cause it is one of the best games ever made and it was a race between CS, Q3 and Unreal. Nowdays tho, QC is having much harder task, with so many look-like games of a same genre. Unless (big unless) Devs stop being stubborn so much and listen to what the actual market demand is.
Valve didn't make CS in the first place. It was a mode for Half-Life made by few modders. Half-Life, on the other hand, was made with source engine which is heavily modified id tech 2 or Quake 1 engine if you like.
I keep seeing everyone say "I hate BR but Apex Legends is amazing" so I gave it a try...it's... okay? Slightly more mobility focused, slightly more refined, but still a pretty run of the mill BR at the end of the day.
1. Pretty par for the course.
2. What? You can pick up downed players, and unique to that game if a player on your team is outright killed you can still revive them at a revive beacon if you get the thing off their body fast enough.
