“Quake community is toxic”
I keep hearing this from time to time.

Where does this come from? Is it even true?

YMMV, but in my in-game experience you just don't have time to write ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in chat, voice chat is rarely used and even completely disabled in some countries like Russia, and the game nature is not team focused, so I'd rather say the game itself is not really toxic, especially comparing to team-based shooters like OW, R6S or CS:GO

But the other media (like reddit, discord, etc), in other hand, not so much. The game community keep blaming developers/publisher for snail-pace development and uncertain future.

It's one of the best communities in any mp game that I know

I actually think the Quake Champions community is pretty good for the most part. Most people will wish you "good luck" at the start of a game or help out if you're having problems. You get the occasional a-hole or person that can't accept that other people are better than them but that's true for anything. I don't have any experience with Discord or other forums than here so can't say what they're like but Steam is usually reasonably polite and friendly.

mainly for when newcommers enter ql team modes and they get callvote kicked out and said they are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ etc. won't exactly welcome new players to join our already niche afps community.

TBH beginners jumping into live matches, sometimes seeing maps/modes for the first time, can bring balance to the force in teeth grinding ways. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1988676960

Appreciate the comments (and link) guys.

My experience has been similar to what Stillwater, Ty and Redgrey said: a few bad apples but mostly good people.

I’ve definitely had my toxic moments when I have fits of rage and say something I later regret but I’ve gotten better (I hope).

lol. Point made nonetheless.

I would say it's volatile, but not exactly toxic. You're always going to have the occasional rage-a-holic post, or commentary in game, or perhaps someone with "mocking or belligerent" comments after someone had a bit too much to drink, or smoked some really potent cannabis, perhaps something more...

It's always been this way.

For me, I don't drink anymore (sober 11 years now). I no longer have those post that I later regret, or surprised to find what I wrote, or did, later. It's not half as toxic as me waking up with blood on my face, hands, body, after a night of hard drinking, drugs, (sometimes in jail) and none of it's my own. (don't remember what happened) I'm quite sure some have similar experiences out there as well.

However, I do occasionally have those moments where I have a very low tolerance for some of the petty BS whining and complaining. The in game antics don't bother me much, TBH. I write that off as immaturity and rage. But it still bothers me to see players beating down another for simply being inept and/or inadequate. Everyone's got to learn, and that's just an unfortunate part of the process.
