The lack of a classic mode might be the reason for the dropping player population and resulting queue times, among other things.
My point being: adapting to a new era of quake was one thing, even with a very open mind, but everything else was just too crappy to do so.
Btw.: you're right, some sort of classic mode might be fancy to try at least.
Every snowflake picks some x that they in particular happen to dislike about the game and then blame that x for the somewhat low player population, as if the world revolved around their problems.
We have previously explored classic modes in the Arcade (like the recent Classic Instagib: Visor only!) and will continue to do so. If they are popular, they might even become permanently available!
