But now... Bethesda (not really id) is greedy AF.
how else should they make money to keep the servers online in a free to play game?
How much do you think it cost PUBG to run servers for 1.6 mill peak players daily, enough to still run for years after release?
No...
first time i hear something like this. the original battlefront 2 to name an example had it servers closed by ea and other games too. WoW classic got its servers back from the community. blizzard shut them down.
Some games have only company run dedicated servers, they stay up while they're either profitable, or for a while afterwards as good will if the company thinks it will encourage the players on to their upcoming games. Sometimes the company releases the server binaries so the community can keep playing after the company stops putting money into the project - Quake Live did this. Otherise when they're gone the game is dead online.
Some games release dedicated servers either alongside the company servers, or as the only servers.
Some games use P2P networking so don't have any servers.
