I don't think we will ever see real customisability in QC tho.
The config file format is absolutely rubbish and is probably specifically made this way to make it a complete ♥♥♥♥♥ to try and make a custom config, not to mention the exact opposite of user friendly. Pretty much they probably looked at how easy it was to configure previous quake's, and decided config format had to be as ♥♥♥♥♥ as possible, so majority of players will not play around with custom settings.
Mean while, in reality, what has happened is people are using custom gpu driver settings, macroing in alias functionality as well as custom steam launcher options etc.
So it has absolutely backfired. It's like a company saying "we have made a firewall and you can't break through it". Lo and behold people will do as they see fit in order to make the game feel more friendly to them. Average joe doesn't care what she or he can't play with at a tournament, it'll come down to getting the game run for them in a good way, not have the game feel clunky and without options to really "settle in" to feel at home in the game.
So the issue with zoom is a lot bigger then just a single setting. It's the bigger picture that needs to be changed.
There's no real argument to not give us options, but alas from what i can recall the idea is that everyone should be on the same "playing field".
There will never be such a thing. We're still a good decade away, absolute minimum, from everyone basically only needing to have 1 computer that is so powerful it can do anything. That is the minimal requirement of "even playing field". And that's just the hardware side.
I think what they really mean is "I'm too lazy to edit my config, so I don't think that someone who takes the time do so should gain any advantage".
I dont agree with it but its becus its "arcane knowledge" that you have to know ontop of the controls.Of course weapon stats and such are invariably the same so its a mute point thought I suppose in theory it lowers the barrier of entry.
You could say the same about circle/strafe/rocket jumping and many other key gameplay mechanics. Poor argument IMO.
On a side note - config modifications aren't something new or exclusive to Quake. Pretty much all PC players (those likely to stumble across Quake anyway) are aware of the fact that you can modify game config files, whether or not they choose to take the time to do so.
Those are more about mechanical excution (and are self demonstrated when used) then learning a "semi programing langauge" to interact with console. No nooblets going to know out the gate about forcedmodels or no smoke trails.
Even on the option front somone with foliage turned off on multiple "modern titles" is going to have a big advantage; Of course any one willing to put in that level of time and effort is going to be better any way becus they will have become "practiced".
Again I dont agree with it but it is what it is.
Strafe jumping just looks like you're spamming jump and looking sideways to a newb. You need to understand how it works to actually become profficient.
Learning console commands is nowhere near learning a programming language, lol. You're basically just assigning values to some variables and most people are already familiar with this from other games. Even a lot of singleplayer games have command consoles and/or editable config files.
Even CSGO allows you to create a custom config. Allowing a player to fully customise the game to match their needs is absolutely essential for any serious competitive game IMO.
As for the foliage options - again that option is available to everyone therefore it's fair by definition. Googling "best graphic settings for visibility" takes all of 30 seconds.
