The skill cap is too high.
I just had 130 Armor, 100 HP and got killed in 2 rockets - while I could not kill the other player with apparently 3 rockets. WTF is going on with this game. I just went 0/10, never have I ever done this bad. Ok, I'm not good at this game, lol, I understand that. But I just cannot get a kill, its soo frustrating.

/rant off.

Skill cap should not be only high, but unattainable, for a game or a sport to be good. I have a feeling you are talking about something else. Perhaps average skill of the player base or something?

puts level 1 players against 20+ thats enough too make anyone question why it..

There's a couple variables that might explain what happened in that match, Evilbones. There's damage fall off the further away you are from the rocket's impact, so depending on where your enemy shot you, and where you shot him, that can account for the difference in damage.

Quake is definitely a game where you get more out of it the more time you put in. You should always be able to hop in, get a few frags, and have fun, but there is a skill curve depending on your familiarity with FPS games. (Arena FPS games especially!) So I can understand it might be frustrating to not be able to get a kill, but I guarantee that, over time, you'll start to see improvements in your gameplay. :)

Player levels only indicate how long a person has been playing, not their skill level. A level 1 person could beat a level 30 person if they had more skill.

I believe you'll play better once the net code is fixed.
There were some times in beta that it was good and I usually find myself 1st and 2nd most of the time.

Ok, thank for the tips / advice. I didn't know about the damage fall off, suppose I need to find a "tips" video, I shall keep plugging away as I do feel the game has great flow, great graphics - plus I need to understand each champ..

When talk about 3 rockets? How much exacly damage you dealt with them? I'm sure those weren't direckt rockets because almost any champions full stacked die with 3 direct.
Lots of players still use the rockets even though the weapon is severely nerfed compared to past titles. The "bunny hop" and shoot at the feet technique seems very popular even with one rocket auto reload. Hate to say it but if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Learn that technique because you will be facing off in tight quarters half the time or more.

Outside of that, the game seems to be missing some things, atmosphere, twitch, weapon realism, sounds. It's pretty par for the course or not enough improved over the previous titles. Game modes are blah. Sacrifice is the only one I play and it's very hard to follow. The announcer basicially tells you what to do or where to go, and the maps have "low visibility," in other words, you can rarely see your team or the carriers.

My two cents, but imho, it has a long way to go (if I am going to keep playing and coming back). I am a UT fan so maybe I am not getting as much out of it as Quake fans.

This is one thing I am curious about. In Quake and Quake 2, the rockets had a minimum radius damage of 40 points, and ramped up to max damage from there. In Quake 3 I think the radius might be a little larger even though the splash falloff is 1 minimum instead of 40, but I was wondering if the ramping on the rockets could get a little tweaking.

the skill cap is the entire reason most people play quake.
we like to know we're winning because we're better, not because of luck or some external factor.
now if only the netcode or hitreg was fixed.

If you can't outplay them try outsmarting them. People with many kills and massive stacks thend to run really fast spamming rockets and such, try to set an ambush with a good escape way in case you mess up
