If you're planning on playing with a controller please do everyone a favour and stay out of the team game modes.
I'm sorry you'll miss your pad, but not including gamepad support is an intentional part of this.
I've only ever heard of one gamepad player who was reasonable at Quake on a joypad, GEN1US : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zffq-1G_x_E, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwcOP8CVR5I and he was no match for kb/m players still.
I've seen a couple of players who liked to use the d-pad instead of wasd and the mouse to aim still, but at less than 0.001% of quake live players it was not likely to continue to get custom support.
If you really insist on using a joypad you could always use xpadder or similar.

You could always go full tox. mouse1 to move forward, mouse2 to move back, z to move left, x to move right and C to shoot.
>> wants to play high competitive AFPS
Makes real sense...
A decade of CoD's sales and popularity domination and devs catering to console audiences distorted people's perspectives.
There was a time when almost everyone was content with the M&KB combo in PC shooters and it also allowed for much more competitive play and things you simply can't pull off with a gamepad.
Question how you know a genre doesn't work on a device? On PC you can play slowpaced call of duties and whatever, on PC you can also play fastpaced classic FPS like duke3d or play quake on 1700ups speed without any issues. On a pad you can't play the latter because the pad can't keep up with the pace due to not being suitable for high octane gameplay :)
interesting. I use a Elite controller playing Quake Champions and keep up just fine.
