you both had to finish the first area by killing the first area boss. Then you two have access to the multiplayer. One of you have to create an multiplayer game. you can search for multiplayer games which are actually open. There you can find the MPgame of your friend. If you two want to play alone, when use a password for your game.

The only other things that should be mentioned is you cant progress story while in multi-player and that the areas you can access is limited to the hosts progression.
Basically if the host has only unlocked two areas, you can only play in said two areas. And it's also worth noting you can't do everything in multi-player, such as the end-game infinite dungeon.
