Why is SAO overrun by girls?
As title suggests....why are there so many girls compared to guys in the game?

I have not really watched the anime yet so I apologize for my ignorance.

Yeah as mentioned the anime is a borderline harem story, and as such has far more girls than guys.

Although, compared to some harems, this particular title is not all in your face about it. So it's more bearable for those are not fans of the genre.

why wouldn't they 'poof out of existence'? they are basically useless in terms of clearing the bosses on each floor so they just stay down on the lower floors and enjoy SAO which a lot of people had decided to do in the game
and no it's not a harem are you people dumb Asuna has been the main heroine and Kirito's gf (and even in-game wife + having a "child") since the first half of the first season lol Kirito couldn't care less about the other (TWO [2]) girls liking him and they don't get in any ecchi situations
To-LOVE-Ru is an example for a harem filled with ecchi for each female - SAO is not
and why it has more girls than guys is because it isn't JoJo's bizzare adventures go watch that if you want to watch big bulky men beat the crap out of each other or whatever (I haven't seen it personally I just have a vague idea of what it's about)
Because it isn't JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is not an explanation lol.

It is bizzare to me that SAO is full of mostly chicks. I just would have thought there would be some sort of explanation somewhere why there were way more girls than guys.

Ratio just seems weird is all. But hey I still love the game. Fatal Bullet looks like it is going to be amazing. Pre ordering that one soon for sure.

Because Moeism I guess. It's just how most Anime series that isn't Shounen Action, Josei Romance or Shounen Ai is these days, because Japan just likes to ensure there's plenty of 'Eye Candy' for males, possibly because they're more viewed by males than females

Funny thing about SAO is both the first anime adaptation and the new reboot of the of the novel (Sword Art Online: Progressive) actually joke about the rarity of girls in MMO; in the former players were forced into their real appearance when they were trapped in the game and most of the female characters turned out to be male; in the latter Asuna is the center of attention because female players are so rare.

That aside, the reason Kirito is surrounded by so many girls in this game is a bit convoluted, because the continuitiy between the original novel, manga, and anime is different from the games, rebooted novel, and rebooted manga.

In the original story Kirito meets Asuna, Lisbeth, Silica, and Yui (who kinda doesn't count, since she's an AI) in the SAO death game, Leafa doesn't show up until the story moves on to another game called ALfheim Online, Sinon only shows up in Gun Gale Online, and Yuuki only shows up after they return to ALO. So Kirito's harem of seven girls was built up over several years across three games, with basically one new girl introduced each major story arc.

Now in the game's continuity, the developers threw in Asuna, Lisbeth, Silica, Yui, Leafa, and SInon into the first game (Infinity Moment), likely to appeal to fans who had their particular favorite girl; Rain and Seven were introduced in Lost Song; Philia, Argo, Yuuki, and Strea were introduced in Hollow Fragment; and Kizmel, Tia, and Premiere were introduced in Hollow Realization. The game continuity suffered from having too many girls at the start and introducing an average of three girls per game, leading to this bloated harem.

The slightly confusing part is this game refers to Argo and Kizmel as if they were in the original SAO death game, but neither of them were actually in the original story or the first game; instead they were introduced in the reboot (SAO: Progressive) of the original story, so they retconned that into the game's story.

tl;dr: Kirito's swimming in girls because of retconning and game devs insisting on adding more girls every new game.

in HR they aren't as all over him as they are in the anime/ln and previous games. Its nice to see the other girls finally somewhat respect that he is with Asuna in HR.

Progressive is not really a reboot, its more of a expansion that bascally lays out what happened on each floor in detail, as the LN kinda skipped huge chunks of it. From what I hear floor 6 takes up 2 entire volumes by itself alone. Vol 5 and 6 of progressive iirc. Going to be intersting to read what the hell happened on floor 6 to make it take 2 entire volumes just for it. Thats longer than the entire base SAO death game arc.

Argo was in the orignal death game, but she never had a major role, she was more of a information provider to kirito and crew, but she never activly took place in battle in the orignal SAO as a frontliner in the ln. She did however make (with kirito's and other beta testers help) that new player help guide that was mentioned very early in the LN/anime. That guide saved many players lives in the end. Kirito also meets with argo a few times during it to look for info. So while she is not a focus character like Lisbeth, Silica etc, she WAS there for the sao beta and the sao death game portions. Then she joined them in ALO as well. She wasn't in GGO since that was kirito bascally being hired to investigate and none of the normal girls were involved. She also is not in Alicization, but then again till the war arc, none of the orignal chars play any part inside the virtual world he is in this time, its all new chars Eugeo, Alice etc.

As for Kizmel, I think she was mentioned at least once in the orignal light novel by Kirito and Asuna at some point, which means she was there in the orignal game, that was a pretty early floor.

As for Yuuki, she technacally shouldn't even be alive right now, if you seen mothers rosario you'd know why. Mind you she was retconned in a realistic way, they just got her condition stable again.

As to why they keep putting in new girls, well, they need to add some fresh blood. Though I dislike how the 2 new girls in Fatal Bullet die in the normal ends, there are 2 of them and one of them dies in each, which one dies depends on choices you make. By die I don't mean in the vr game, as you can revive them, I mean they somehow get killed irl, due to choices you the protagonist makes as you go thru the game. I'm personally based on looks alone, will get Kureha killed first, as she looks way to bubbly for my tastes, Then Zeliska is next, then i'll go for the true end, which in the true end, I assume they both survive this time.
