The controls are good (provided you use a controller) in my opinion, though they may become rather repetitive after a while. Though you do need to stay on your toes to take down bigger foes (until you get OP and start EX Dancing atleast)
Getting stronger does feel good at first, but after a while you become a monster to the point where fights weren't fun anymore and you became too strong. Picking up weapons from chest can boost your damage output immensely, to the point where you one-hit enemies. I recommend sticking to weapons from vendors until you're done with the main story.
But once you start taking on the dlc content... It's going to get tough. VERY tough. At that point you need to use everything at your disposal: buffs, legendary weapons, armor, etc.
The game is build like a MMORPG, big fields with a lot of (respawning) enemies, mini-bosses, random loot, tons of grinding (Only if you commit yourself to clearing everything, since you need a lot of resources for some equipment) and a lot of numbers.
Multiplayer is kinda dead. You're lucky if you find someone for co-op stuff and there is not much to it, other than some raid bosses. There is PvP in this game which is absolutely stellar in my opinion, but I have yet to find a single lobby. A shame, really.
The main story is about 40 hours, with the dlc lasting about 20 hours or so. That is without including the 1000 (yes, I'm not kidding) Floor dungeon. The game can last you anywhere between 50 and 300 hours if you care enough to invest that much time in it.
When you are in the main hub of the game, you can do certain events with other characters, which are just skits basically. They (most of the time) add nothing to the story and are just optional filler, but if you are a fan of SAO you'll probably like them.
I personally think the game is great, if you are into action games with an MMORPG touch. If you don't like SAO you might not get a lot of enjoyment out of it, since a lot of the game is tailored towards fans of the anime. I recommend watching a few gameplay videos, because it is rather hard to describe with words.
TL;DR
If you like SAO and action games and don't mind grinding and at times monotonous combat, get it
If you don't like SAO but still like action games with an MMORPG touch, I'd recommend staying away from it. A lot of the game is tailored towards the fanbase, meaning that you would miss out on a lot of stuff.
If you have no opinion about SAO but still want to play this game, watch SAO. If you don't like the anime, you'll probably not like the game.
