Why is english translation so bad?

I'm not a native speaker, but I see tons of mistakes of all kind. It's probably not an edited automated translation (google wouldn't mistake "her" for "here" etc, lol), but context seems wrong like in every other sentence. Also the translator obviously didn't have any experience translationg anime material, nor was familiar with the source.

It's not only in english. I play the german version and there's the same problem too.

For whatever reason the English translations for all of the Sword Art games is really bad, I blame low budget. The first one had the excuse that they uses the South-East Asia English release, which are normally pretty bad. They don't really have that excuse past Hollow Fragment, so I can guess that they are going cheap on the translation budget.

The translation isn't done by their main team, and it's a niche game, so they're not going to blow a AAA budget on a Niche game when they'll never breakeven on it

The story translation is actually fairly well done, I would even say it's slightly overdone and they spent a lot more time than they needed making conversations feel natural in English. They deviate a little here and there to add some extra humor, which I have mixed feelings about, but the tone of the scene is always in-line with what's being said in Japanese. The issue is with the editing, which is done by somebody other than the translators, there are a few typos.

Konnichiwa is commonly used as a mid-day (afternoon) greeting. Konichiwa can also be used as an informal greeting for "Hello"

The Chinese translation is pretty good.

Not just mistakes. Some words are missing sometimes. No big deal for me though.
