Take a look at the emotions Argo has in her "bubble", you can cycle between a description of the emotion and numerical values of how much of any stat they provide.
Lock in the emotions that give Attack and Buffer stats so that they never degrade, and every time a desired emotion shows up during combat press "Good Job" quickly.
Every emotion you don't need will disappear over time, unless you "Good Job" it.
The more different emotions you try to grow the lower their maximum cap will be, so try to go with just one or two emotions.
Here something that might help you.
Prioritize Warlike, taciturn, Smart or perverse or crybaby.
Try to only allow 4 strong emotions, put warlike to at least level 3 for a 10% Atk boost . I can't show you a buffer setup because I don't use one but at the end you want something like this https://imgur.com/a/u6WZs, the Rank 4 emotion is her primary role, for a buffer the number beside from the green icon must be the highest of the bunch ( and at least at 255 to unlock the buffer's armor).
I think that the ideal setup is:
-1 Rank 4 emotions.
-3 rank 2 emotions.
or
-3 rank 3 emotions
-1 rank 2 emotions.
Red sword is ATK, Blue Shield is DEF (tank) ,Green guy is buff, Yellow guy is irrevelant for combat but will influence your npc in town.
If you want a buffer you must have your Green stats at 255 to unlock the buffer armor, if you want a DPS you must have your red sword at 255 to unlock the ATK armor etc, great armors before the DLC.
In your case you want something like this.
256-4xx buffer.
150-200 Atk.
Don't put too much Atk because if she have 200 ATK and 200 buff, she'll do both at the same pace. (or do it if you want her to attack as much as she buff).
Still check the google link, in the "Trait Ability key" tab you have the detailed icons.
If you want a tank, you choose a emotion with a large Blue "Tough (DEF) Aggro" growth rate,
if you want a buffer you choose a emotion with a large green "Helper (BUF) Buff" growth rate etc.
