You can make any changes by going to your room at the inn.
Luckily, this BS is done with when SAO: Fatal Bullet comes out since the character you will create in that game will be the main character.
For additional party members, you can have up to 4 party members at one time(Including yourself), and 3 additional NPC party members. You can add npc's by completing their quests, improving their relationship with you via in game dialogue, and waiting for them to messgae you with an additional quest, normally one that would take a little longer because they require something rare/difficult, and once your relationship rank with them levels up to 3(You can check thir relationship stat with default "H" button, it will show the rank at the bottom), you can use the default "U" key to talk them and request them to join. You can have up to 3 differrent groups(Max 12 players) in raid missions with bosses. Keep in mind that npc's will die permanently when killed if I remember correctly, though none of the main story characters will die permanently. In addition, NPC's will either be in town OR out in the field fighting monsters, so keep that in mind. Also, NPC parties out in the field that are not a part of your part(As far as I know) will not die permanently. Keep in mind I'm still not 100% sure if NPC's can die permanently at all, so take that with a grain of salt.
