I guess it's just too hard to strike a good balance between an excellent single-player and co-op elements. People get up in arms real quick if you all but mention a desire for co-op at all because the assumption is the single player experience simply must suffer as a result.
I'd like to see this proven wrong someday but it's very difficult to implement well on a technical level I think.
I too would love love love for more co-op options in rich rpg worlds. Honestly It's one of the things I've been hoping for for years and years. You're not alone ;)
Multiplayer RUINS games.
Though, if it was like Fable 3 multiplayer I wouldn't mind TBH.
