Best weapon for a mage?
I've chosen the mage as the starting class and I'd rather focus on spells and aoe stuff, but when mana is out I guess a weapon could be useful.
The game gives you a mace which is kinda odd, is that a good weapon type for a mage?

The weapon skill mages get at the start is for maces/axes/hammers but if you want you can respec fairly early on and swap to using swords. Either is fine as a backup, the main limit is how many attribute points you want to put into Agility or Strength since you'll want to put most of your attribute points into Mental Power and Willpower, and maybe some into Endurance if you want to wear better armour.

Swords do more damage but axes/maces/hammers do more damage to armour.

Right, thank you.

Which weapon type can do fairly well with less points as possible?
Cause I believe spells already bypass armor?

You're going to want to concentrate on mental power and willpower, so no weapons are going to be that good for you (better weapons require higher strength or agility).

At a certain point, weapons will just be a waste of time, as you'll do so much damage with the magic missile (and will be able to cast it so often) that melee will always be a downgrade.

Agree with the above.
There is a mace you can get in New Serene as a quest reward that requires 2 strength and is pretty decent (it is excellent for stunning people) so you could consider using that, but with my mage any points I didn't put on mental power or willpower went to endurance.

Guns are good because your squishy mage doesn't have to get close to enemies to attack. The best ring only needs 4 mental power and the best necklace only needs 3-4 willpower depending on what you use. If you want the most magic regen and 20% resistance to poison/magic/elemental damage you will need 4, but I went with the one that gives shadow burst 60 more damage and it only needs 3 willpower. With only 2 points in accuracy and the rifle perk, I have a gun with 578 damage after modding it.

In combat I used my primary Magic attack + Storm + Magic potions. Early in the game I experimented weapon-swapping with my One-handed Axe, but once I got my Mental Power Attribute higher than 1, the Axe did low damage compared to my Magic attack.
