First of all, you don't need to pass those soldiers near the barracks. There's an entrance to the barracks through the tavern and the tavern entrance can be reached if you walk a part along the waterside.
When you want to drink a potion, make sure you get yourself out of the combat area. There's a dodge movement which can do that. You may consider to set a trap between you and what you're fighting as some sort of extra protection. Using Statis bombs would help too, as it would freeze them for some time.
As for other help, that particular mission requires Kurt in your team, giving you one more team member to choose. Personally I prefer Siora for that, as she's got a spell that heals both you and replaces your armour; while she's able to deal some damage with her (elemental enchanted) sword.
Vasco would be a good choice as well, since he got a gun (to reduce armour and stun) and uses a poison coating at his sword.
As for that monster, keep moving. Again, the team setup is important, so make sure you have done a quick save at a nearby campsite, so you can change the team composition if you notice the fight is too hard.
Again, Siora is a good choice here due to her ability to heal you and replenish your armour.
I dunno who my other party member was, I think it was Vasco. His gun is certainly useful to do an occasional stunning of that monster.
As for skills, like in all RPG's you need to make choices. If you notice your skill setting is wrong for a certain fight and you have chosen the stronges party, use a memory stone to adjust the skills. Also make sure you explore the maps you visit from time to time, as you'll find skill altars once in a while, giving you the chance to boost your skills a bit more.
And for 2-handed weapons and best (heavy) armour you will need strength, so invest in that.
Thorin :)
and if you having difficulties then that 100% on you other then very early game, game is easy.
Dodge place traps / stun lock with shooting.
But if you hate it that much just move on to something else not like it has a massive high tier personal story or w/e to keep you totally engaged.
Another issue is that magic depletes too fast. I am completely out of magic potions, don't have the ingredients to craft new ones and don't want to spend all my coins on buying them from vendors. I haven't seen any skills that give a boost to magic other than the ones that reduce magic cost by 10%.
Buy the precursors whenever possible. Grab Aphra for just as long as your making potions, then switch to another companion if that's what you want. I never head out adventuring without at least 20 major magic potions on hand.
