Six one way, half a dozen the other if we're being honest.

I personally preferred vigor for exploring, but it takes moes than one point.

I would go with Charisma or Intuition.

Between those two Science.

I will say that depending on the talent you only have to put one point in it. You can usually get one point from one of your companions and one point from gear.

Lockpicking. Ran into several locked chests early on and it drove me nuts.

Here's how talents (except charisma) work. 1 point you can buy, another you get from an armor strap, third one is granted by a companion after you do their personal quest. Not giving any spoilers, but the companion who gives Vigor lets you do the quest very late in the game, so it's worth investing into.

All the (open) chests contain nothing but pocket change and rusty swords. Is the loot in the locked chests worth the investment?

No idea if you're referring to any on the continent before you set sail. I didn't get lockpicking until later. But I'm one of those people who hates having things like that gated from me.
