Report a translation problem
Your companions basically don't give a ♥♥♥♥ what you do or say to anyone, they don't evolve over time. Hell, come to think of it, neither does your character. Almost none of the choices in game actually matter, instead they give you status updates about the factions when you make decisions (which pan out to be the opposite of what you pick sometimes). I maxed my status with each faction within a few hours of landing on the new land.
The dialogue is okay, with decent voice acting, but man does this game fall flat. The title of it is almost ironic with that price tag. Props to Spiders for duping everyone with that trailer which made the game look so so sweet, and walking away with a paycheck. They deserve it after their other gems, but man was this game disappointing.
I wanted so badly to like it, but every time I turned it on I kept asking myself "why am I doing this? why am I doing that? why am I going here? why can't I just... oh ♥♥♥♥ this" and quit after about 35 hours.
The game has some decent parts, and if you really let yourself get wrapped up in the lore I think that might be your ticket. I'm just not a fan of this title; love their other work though.
I dont think zero every played the game. dont take him on his word, because my experience is very different than his. Literally opposite of all the negatives he said. I dont trust he every played it.
Not only did I double back on the extent of my criticism, but every single thing I mentioned is true IMO. The dialogue was written on what appears to be a 9th grade reading level. There are minimal amounts of character interactions that you can control. And the factions are almost pointless. The ambassador you talk to while question on the main land gives reputation based on how you finish the quest, but there aren't enough of those triggers. I handed in that one quest before sailing to the island and I was already friends with that faction.
Then when you get to the island, the natives pretty much force you to take one path by going right around you. The world just feels empty. Everyone talks like there are these huge cities with giant floating commerce trades. Truth is I can count on one hand how many NPCs I can talk to in any of those cities, not counting shop keepers.
And lets talk about the castles, manors, whatever you wanna call the building your characters cousin chills in. The city itself looks beautiful, in a (this was places here specifically for the character to do this) sort of way. The interiors were cool, but once I ventured out and saw the other two cities, I noticed they all had the same group of architects working for them. The man, big hall, doors on either side that wind up in the same big sitting area the main stairs lead to. Okay, the devs got a bit lazy there, sure, but then walk into any other house. Living room, fireplace, stairs leading up to a hallway with one single room. Canopy bed with a dresser.
Then the natives. Mud hut in pattern A over here, mud hut in pattern B over there. Lets go to the other natives who all talk and look the same despite being opposing groups.
And don't get me started on the accent that only some of them share, but can't hide well enough to know they're actually English lol
Don't get me wrong, you might find some enjoyment out of this game if you're looking for a casual RPG to dive into the lore. The game has all the RPG elements in place, they're just not deep or involving enough to me. We can disagree and both be right.
Haven't seen a crap quest yet, all I found to be interesting with different stages.
VA is decent except the native accents, they are dreadful (pun intended) a cross between bad Irish and bad Caribbean accents.
I've done Kurt and Vascos companion quests they were very good too.
Combat is OK, my first impressions of the giant enemies was scary, but after killing one, they are not difficult to deal with .
You can play straight standard combat or a fusion of styles, while I'm playing a Hunter ranged and traps type, I had intended to replay as a mage, but I can't see myself replaying the game.
So, imo, by any yardstick it's a good game, decent story, but for me no replayability.
I got it for €30 on Xbox. Well worth it.

Haven't done that quest , nor have I heard an obvious out of place accent like that tbh. But I've only played a couple of days.

read all your comments. and i half agree. its true this isn't a dragon age origins/masseffect/kotor. but i think thats the kind of game they were wanting to emulate. this game feels like a more fleshed out bound by flame, or a way more fleshed out mars war logs (previous spiders games). that doesn't mean the game is amazing though. those two other games, as much as i wanted to love them, just fell short in so many ways.
i never managed to get friendly with factions as quickly as you. certainly not before leaving the start area. some factions are actually locked as suspicious until mid-end game. so takes more than a few hours imo. if you do all side quests you will be locked into being friends with everything. and it can feel like you have no freedom to impact the plot or story. there isn't REALLY too many quests that allow you to complete them by bombing them. although one does spring to mind. general rule is if you do quests for people it usually makes them like you. you actually need to IGNORE quests, or really try and mess them up deliberately to make people not like you. thats how you SLIGHTLY change the narrative. but... it's extremely minimal impact i agree.
i did get a sense of satisfaction out of uniting all the factions though. and knowing that if id not helped them or angered them they'd not have been present to 'help me' in the end. and changes the epilogue messages you get. its not much but thats what makes a roleplay game for me. i think its too much to expect a game to have fully fleshed out alternate plots based on decisions you make. although, playing a game like that would be pretty awesome and have a lot of replayability.
totally agree in your description of the world. as soon as you start the game and are in your residence. its just a couple of corridor areas with npcs you can't interact with pacing. and felt fairly empty. felt EXACTLY like bound by flame and mars. looks cool but then you realise its just a corridor with some non interact-able npcs in it.
so if you played and enjoyed the other spiders game play this one. because its the best. and you might enjoy it if you played fable (i loved fable 1-3. minus the forced co-op stuff). but they are definitely different games. both have parry/dodge based combat (greedfall has a tactical pause though). encourage potion spamming. both games let you spam firearm shots lol. both have simple upgrade systems (more complex in greedfall) after that though... they just play and feel different.

you're probably right. but if i had to pick something to compare it to it would need to be some of the older bioware games. whichever one. if you've not played the other spiders games that is. bound by flame could have been so good. but god was it rough and unpolished. anyway think we're leaving the original post now. message me if you want to discuss games lol
Heyyyy, an opinion that disagrees but isn't personal, THANK YOU. You get it, and yes I probably exaggerated a few things including the faction friendliness. However, I did end up friends with one faction before I went to the island.
I loved Fable, plays a bit of 2 and beat 3, but wasn't a huge fan of any of them besides the first. It had my favorite villain (Jack) and gave a sense of awe when completing quests. The progression of your character through the good/evil choices was something unknown at the time, and KOTOR I & II expanded heavy on this. Mass Effect perfected it. You can't touch ME2.
The Gothic series, the Risen series, ELEX - pretty much anything by these devs gives the best worlds to explore and interact with. Hidden clues for chests, hundreds of notes and radio broadcasts, tons of NPCs out in the middle of nowhere to talk with even if they don't have quests.
I think ELEX had everything this game wanted, but because this game has better combat it took the cake (and honestly the advertising was better, ELEX had almost none). Spiders does one thing better in their games, and thats storytelling. I stuck with it because I honestly wanted to know what happens to my cousin. I thought he was pompous at first but then he starts to get wise and I thought his arc would have been better, but the devs refusal to dive deep into anything made me quit. I can load it back up if yall really wanna know where I am to see if it might be worth pressing on, but I was getting so bored of it.
The player camp in between travels was a nice touch until it wasn't, then it became increasingly annoying. I dunno, my 2 cents, ain't worth ♥♥♥♥ but like you I can talk about video games all day lol
