Probably something todo with the curse/disease that is ravaging the old lands.

There's a disease, I forget the name, that is the impetus for the story. You are, essentially, a diplomat that was sent to this 'new world' because it's being rapidly colonised to the detriment of the locals in search of a cure for the current epidemic/for profit/to convert the godless heathens etc. The lady that seems like your mother in the trailer has it, and so apparently, does the player character.
