Some quests have multiple ways to complete objectives, that is only one option. I haven't yet encountered a single quest that requires I have any points in science at all.

Do the side quests and you will be level 5 before you leave.

As the others have stated there are multiple ways to complete the quest but this goes for just about every quest in the game. If you run into a block where you don't have the stat to do a quest a certain way, there will guaranteed be an alternative method or more even. I believe that specific quest has about 4 methods.

The only thing I have left to do is go to the captain and tell him I am ready to leave other than this quest which is getting those crates on the boat..I already modified the ship ledger. Maybe I dont have to make the laced drink. If this is the case they should not leave objectives that are not required in the list. If I can now get the merchandise on the ship then it should not be showing the potion as the next step.

You don't but you do need to get the crates into the storehouse so you need to find a way to empty the storehouse of guards and let the porters know they are good to load the crates in. You might have already done this which if you have done both that and the ledger modification you are complete with that section of the mission~

You do not go back once you leave. But you can go to a blacksmith (or craft it if high enough skill) and upgrade a weapon to give you +1 science or 1+ vigor, etc. There is a blacksmith in the first town you arrive at on the new island.

Oh so I have to also get the crates into the warehouse. I see. I am not really fond of this quest log. All it does is show objectives. There is no quest description. People sometimes forget why they are doing a quest and what the quest is about. Especially over multiple days of playing.

Just open the map, all quests you are still doing are marked with a ! on the map which is also the place you have to go to fulfill it.

Nononono you got it wrong -or the game explained it badly- this is not that you can't end the quest without science but you can't finish the quest that way without using science. Look around, you have other ways to complete the quest without sleeping potions.

The most annoying part is, I did it all without the drugs but the drug suggestion still pops up in the quest log and marks as fail if you don't do it. I know it doesn't mean anything but it is annoying seeing a failed mark when you just did it a different way.

Sounds like some quests are not showing as "complete" if you use an alternate method to finish them. And by complete, I mean it should remove the markers for the other methods you didn't use.
