Rings require mental power. Amulets require willpower. As a mage, you'll eventually want both at 4 (5 can wait—you may never even find any that require 5).
I only found one Legendary Ring my whole play through. So, even if you only get to 4 Mental Power you should be okay. Just something to think about Mental Power allows you to do more damage I believe with the rings so if you are pure mage I would highly recommend maxing out Mental Power and Will Power as soon as possible. You will want the healing ability as well but you can kind of mix-match your build style how you see fit.
