Anyway to answer your question, they're not trying to make it impossible, just more difficult except on easy.
Plus if someone is new to Thea 2 and immediately picks hard then gets crushed that's on them not the game. One should always get a feel for a game before picking the hardest settings.
Also, a lot of people saying this were playing on hard and the increase of difficulty is bigger on hard. I was playing on medium/hard and i find it too hard for my taste, but they will try to make this as a setting, and this should solve some issues i think (and make it easier to control for players).
Also, one issue is that the difficulty isn't always properly announced i think, so this doesn't help to estimate correctly the situation.
I will try to play at Easy difficulty and see how it goes.
However the new and harder experience was to most funny game within the last months. I really like it, especially the ironman mode (turn off manual saves).
I play on 180%. In early game, I do find the red challenges get more difficult probably the units in AI groups increased, so AI groups spend 1 action point for every unit, assuming this rule applies to AI as well, while I have to spend 2 and even 3 action points for my chosen one. But the difficulty curve gets more and more easier because of the many events that grant bonus stats to my units. My opinion is reduce difficulty at the early game, but ramp up the difficulty curve heading into mid and late. I don't find much difficulty change on yellow and purple challenges.
Prior to this patch, I found that I could roll around, auto-resolving just about everything. The world was my playground, and I was never at risk unless I went out of my way to find trouble. I've played a little over a hundred turns on the new patch, and I have had to do many tough manual fights, and I have even declined a few encounters because it felt too dangerous. Difficulty is a good thing for the longevity of the game; I don't think the prior patch's difficulty would have held my interest for much longer.
Since it will probably be changed anyway, it will be like you say, people will change the difficulty if it's too hard.
However i find the option interesting and it will be a good thing for players that were finding the game too easy even on hard.
Child card, play a little safe for like 30 turns and then two more adults will make things easier.
