Not really the same kind of genre Monolith is in, but if you're looking for a transition point into the shmup genre, ZeroRanger is the game you're looking for.
I have been waiting for it to release for around six years and playing it to completion in the span of a day, I can tell you it will stand as one of the greatest shmups of all time.
The indie scene are really doing wonders with shmups these days, Monolith and ZeroRanger are both impeccable titles.
