Hello I'd like to help accept my friend request for a quicker process with steam instant messaging and i'll post the fix here when we are done.

JK2 defaults to 640x480 resolution and most new laptops/monitors do not support this resolution they only go down to 800x600. So to fix this you need to follow this guide.

to get to your “gamedata” folder in JK2 and JKA you must go to your steam library, right click Jedi outcast or Jedi academy, then click properties (located in the context menu), now click the tab titled “Local Files” and then click the box titled "browse local files." If you followed these steps correctly you should see a folder pop up titled "Jedi Outcast" or "Jedi Academy" inside that folder there should be another folder titled "Gamedata" open that by selecting the folder and double clicking or select the folder and press enter key. Now you should see two “.exe” files one titled "jk2sp.exe" and "jk2mp.exe" (for JK2) or "jasp.exe" and "jamp.exe" (for JKA) Once you find them look for a folder titled "Base"

Once you find the "Base" folder look inside for two .cfg files titled "mpconfig" and "jkconfig"
open them one at a time with wordpad and use control key + F to find these strings. Type in a little bit of the strings and it should search for it then edit the strings the way I have wrote them do not copy paste at the bottom.

Edit:
seta r_customheight "768"
seta r_customwidth "1024"
seta r_mode "5"

After that is done click the purple floppy disk save icon at the top of word pad and try out the game. If you use save as make sure you save them as .cfg and not .txt or .rtf.

Goodluck let me know if it works.

No need for special files.

this guide tells you how to get widescreen working at any res. as well as a few tweaks to make the game look better. hint, turn off texture compresion and it looks almost like a mid quality indie game now.

Ah yes Please use a guide from 2002 when the native resolutions on monitors were 640x480, 800x900, 1024x768, and wow if you could ever afford it a crt with such a high res of 1600x1200.

LOL
Whats funny is it's almost the exact SAME thing. except it explains what most of the options in the config file mean. if you read it you can make the game look a lot better
You just forgot to add that 'seta r_mode "-1" is needed and that you can set the field of view to a more respectable 90 with 'seta cg_fov "90"

but don't mind me, i am just grabbing infromation from the dark ages of 2002 AFTER the game came out.

You don't need r_mode 1 with the default resolutions. 1024x768 is more like r_mode 4 or 7 I'm not 100% sure I never use that resolution. the fov doesn't matter. In JKA I use 130 FOV just to see around me when dueling. That isn't something to help resolution its more like how much you want to see. Unless you mean at what point does it not look fish eyed lens or something.

You need it when setting any sort of resolution the raven software did not put in as default. It allows the game to fall back to the q3 engine default which basicly runs at any resolution you want. in this case 1920x1080
the only side effect is the intro movies when you start the game are whited out.

I said "You don't need r_mode 1 with the default resolutions." and you said "You need it when setting any sort of resolution the raven software did not put in as default. "

Why are we arguing again? Keep in mind the fact I fixed the OP Mr.Nippleslick's game a long time ago through steam messages.

EDIT: Oh and for the future try to find out OP's monitors native resolution because if you recommend them something like 1080p and they only go as high as 720p They're going to have a bad time.

My way of doing things is just give the most detailed guide possible in text instead of linking so they can view it easier through steam window and also when helping people with little knowledge of computers its best to give them the basic stuff like getting their game to work first with any type of resolution default or custom since the OP wasn't even able to get to the main menu to enter any resolution at all in console because OP monitor didn't support the games first start resolution. Which is why I gave him a non ingame guide of changing it via editing the configs.

The site you @Slatepaws and you @ubern00b Does not go over this. It only gives the ingame guide. So next time you're trying to help read into OP's problem more.
