How to get GLDirect v.5 to work?
My computer is running the new Windows 8.1 driver, which cuts support for many of the old games I used to play (besides Jedi Outcast, I also had troule getting Psychonauts and Sierra/Vivendi's The Hobbit to run). Many forums suggested I download GLDirect, as it would somehow fix the problems with my driver and make my games playable.

So I downloaded it. But I have no idea how to get it to work - when opening it, I see a bunch of files that I can't automatically open with my computer (.h files, .c files, etc.). I don't see an obvious installer function or whatever.

Anyone who has downloaded this, please help - how can I actually implement GLDirect v.5 into my games, and what do I need to do? PLEASE HELP.

Thanks!

Proof that Win8 sucks.

Anyways, I had problems playing W40: Dark Crusade LAN after my older bro got Win8.1. I think downloading OpenGL might help in some cases.

Well, my other games all worked fine and smoothly before the 8.1 patch. But yeah, I agree.

Can you give me a link or anything for that? I think I may have it, I just don't know what to do with it.

http://www.opengl.org/

In the meantime, I'll go ahead and tell you about how I fixed Poker Night 1.

Every time I launched the game, it would crash. So, I went into Compatibility options for the .exe file and set it to WinXP (can't remember, SP2 or SP3), and ran the game as an administrator. It worked every time from then on. I can't tell you which SP I checked, since after I got the items I deleted every trace of the game for being a piece of crap.

Wait... I didn't mean OpenGL, that's another thing.

It could be any of these you're looking for:
Microsoft Visual C++
Microsoft .NET Framework
OpenAL
I can look into what my computer uses in old games (like RCT Deluxe and Interstate '76) to see what they do to run.

When trying to run this game, my computer automatically began installing something related to Microsoft .NET Framework. My game remains unplayable. I'm assuming you own Jedi Outcast, right? Does it work fine for you?

Well, according to Steam, I don't "own" it, but I do play through Steam via Family Sharing. I used to have issues with older games, but I've since gotten many of them to work. I'll keep looking for a solution. In the meantime, how about you look for the software I mentioned above?

Also, this one, DirectDrawFix will fix some rendering issues. Rather than being software, this one is a program that you just select the screwed .exe file and it'll update its compatibility for you. While meant for Age of Empires II, it's worked for other games as well.

I'm gone until later this evening - I'll look at it then. But thank you so much - hope it works.

It's not hard to use, and if you don't trust it that much (even though I know for a fact that it's safe), just don't unzip it. It's just the app itself and a readme text.

How conveniet! I was going to download AoE II next.
I'm installing it now.

When you say select the .exe file, do I drag this DirectDrawFix program into the .exe file itself?

No, as in you open up the DirectDrawFix and it just pulls up a small little dialogue box that asks you to select the screwed .exe the same way you would open a document in Word. It fixes it in less than a second.

Sweet. I'll try it on J.Outcast first. (I just got home so I haven't been able to download the other programs you recommended yet. Those come next)

I'm not finding a direct executable file for J. Outcast. The shortcut icon is a .url since it's connected to Steam, so I'm not sure if I should try this?

(I'm not too tech-savy yet, cuz a lot of this is new to me, so thanks for being patient)

It's in Program Files, not the shortcut.

It'll be under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common, you can find the folder for Jedi Outcast. If you don't see Program Files (x86), try just Program Files.
