Beginning question - How do I switch from gun back to knife?

Playing this game for the first time. I just got a gun. I can't seem to switch it back to the knife (to preserve ammo). I've tried the arsenal menu and the inventory. (I'm using a mouse and keyboard.)

Knife isn't selectable by weapon hot key, just press left mouse or whatever its equivelent is for the console kiddies.

... which would be right trigger without aiming for me.

Then that will cause him to swing the knife, which stays out until you pick up something, open a door or select a different weapon.
